What finches can go well with zebras and society’s

Hi this summer I’m going to get a new species of finch but unsure which one to get just want to get prepared early and tell my mate which breed to keep back for me
I don’t really know them allege types of finches and which go well with other birds and living in aviary my budget is about 30 pound and need them to be compatible with my zebras and society’s in the aviary

Silverbills, spice finches, and common waxbills are about the only passive birds that would fit your budget. However, they should have heat during winter, which could cost quite a bit. Spice finches look similar to society finches, so the risk of interbreeding is higher.

Java finches aren't exactly passive, but a pair may or may not be compatible with other birds in an aviary. They may also require heat.

If you're willing to spend a bit more money, consider a pair of European goldfinches. They are usually cold-tolerant and should be fairly compatible in an aviary. If you decide to get goldfinches, only purchase ones that are close-banded; unbanded or split-banded birds could be wild, and therefore illegal. European Goldfinch

Why not try a Canary? They will offer both colour and song to your aviary.

Any bird that you decide on, will have to come from an outdoor aviary, so as to be used to being outdoors.

Have you considered any of the home bred English birds that are legal to keep?

lovezebs I’m buying them off a guy who lives near me who has a big outdoor aviary and he has canarys I’m buyin one of them a couple month sale after I get some more finches because I want a red one and they are abit expensive atm expecially as I haven’t got the lights in the aviary yet

Adding to this can u have a single canary or do they need pairs ?

Icearstorm and thanks I might try waxbills or spice not to keen on the silver bills don’t really like the look and would you say an insulated aviary and lights for warmth would be enough I was also thinking of hot water bottles

Yes, you can have one male Canary, who will be content in the company of Societies, and can keep the Zebras in their place.

lovezebs okay that’s good news just want to get the aviary fully heated before I buy the bigger more expensive birds how do u tell a female from a male

Fraza The cock sings. Hen's never sing. Their are other differences as well, and most of the canaries bred are actually cocks. They are very aggressive though, and a canary cock will normally hog the food. It works out ok because none of the other birds will take them on because they are a lot bigger. My orange Fife would have had his tenure ended in my aviary because he was trying to kill my yellow-headed yellow gouldian hen, if he was not such a good singer.

The chart in the above post states that start finches are passive. You may want to look up some information on them before making a decision.

Fraza Stars are quite ok in a mixed aviary. They are buggers when they are breeding and don't let other birds near their nest, but no more so than Zebras. They are however hardy birds and don't die easily. I have not had an adult starfinch die on me yet. I have only lost babies due to cold when they fledged during winter in an open aviary.

MariusStegmann thanks that’s nice to know my aviary sleeping pet for the birds where the nests are is quite narrow. Right now I have all the beds low and when I eventually get these star finches I will put there’s near the top so they are away from the others and if I get a canary then a little bit higher
