With Canaries, I band when the wing quills have started to grow and are about 1/2" long. The bands still go on, but by then the bird is growing so fast that within a day or so they can't come off.

And the vegetable oil mentioned earlier works well. The trick is to know your own birds, and put the band on as late as you can and still slip it over the foot without injury to the bird.

To add to this mine are all trying to pull each other’s bands off they haven’t got use to them yet the two that already have rings one are looking like these weirdos :roll:
