Finches update on my zeebs
It's been a while, I have been really busy.
My oldest two finches, Scrambles (9) and Weeb (7) are still alive! This summer, old man Scrambles even got his breeding plumage and he looked great. His cheeks were thick and shiny! Weeb is no spring chicken, and only likes to eat and sit under the heat lamp. Scrambles is well, and hasn't been sick since last year, but he does need extra help getting around and extra nutrients.
The younger two are still together despite all the weirdness they got up to this summer. Vilu, my hen, still falls off the perch, but thankfully, she's not a twirler. She has a hole in her eardrum, and is also nearly deaf! Who knew? It pays to investigate your finches individually. Of course they are still horrifyingly bad parents. Of this round of abandoned eggs, two were valid. The one that made it has pipped internally, amd I'm keeping an eye on it in the kitchen.
From the last clutch they abandoned and then sort of helped me feed (when they felt like it) two went to a new home, and there was a spitstorm of others trying to get their hands on some zebra finches, so more will be produced when Vilu is in condition again. I'm not so wary of more babies entering the world this time around, since there are hearts and homes waiting for them.
The one we kept, a fat hen called Jorgen was somehow de-tamed by the other birds. She used to fly from the cage and land on my glasses, now she panics the moment I enter the room. I'm satisfied with it, she isn't a little baby anymore and it's more important for her to get along with her own kind.
I put away their little fountain for the year, and de-finched the bedroom. It's cold and drafty, si for now they are confined to the warm, tropical bubble inside their cage. Everyone is getting along quite well, they're a joy.
How have all of you been?

Glad to hear that the Zebra kids are doing well... or as well as can be expected anyway
Good luck with the wee tossling.

Welcome back!
Glad to hear your birds are okay. I seem to have a special-needs bird myself; treating each bird as an individual is definitely important for well-being.
