Re: Getting budgies ?goe well with budgies ?

I have a giant flight cage and have kept a flock of budgies in it for 7 years now. I WOULD NOT MIX BUDGIES AND FINCHES.

Some budgies are sweethearts. But many are not.
Some decide that a certain other one is their mate and NOBODY had better get close to her. Or else. Finches are unable to defend themselves against an angry, possessive budgie.
Some decide this is MY place in the flight, and NOBODY had better try to land here.
Some are just cranky and don't like anyone.

Some are psycho killers. Had one very pretty bird who would suddenly take a dislike to someone else, and start attacking. Heard all kinds of noise early one morning, lifted the curtains on the cage to find that Psycho had another bird pinned to the ground, half the beak broken off already, and was ripping out neck feathers trying to rip out her throat. No idea why, as the victim was a very friendly, social bird. Stupid psycho spent the rest of her life in a small cage, since she clearly couldn't live with others (almost got tossed out the door, in the middle of winter.) A finch wouldn't stand a chance against an angry or vicious budgie. And you don't know what personality you're getting until after you have them home. And sometimes they change. Psychobird started out named "Buttercup".

Budgies, being a hookbills, like to shred and chew and destroy anything that is shred-able, chewable, destroyable. They chew through perches, wicker, ropes, plastic, whatever they can get to. Put a cuttlebone in the cage, mine reduce it to powder in a matter of hours. Nests wouldn't stand a chance.

I wouldn't risk budgies and finches together.

If you can get a big cage for the budgies, then just keep budgies in it. Remember that they are birds, too, and love to fly just like any other bird. While they will climb around, and love and need toys to play with and chew up, they do need enough room to fly as well.

What have yer gotta wait till spring for to get canaries, most breeders will be keeping and breeding with em by then so IE there won't be that many for sale

The national at Stafford is on this coming Sunday 8th October and will be thousands of canaries for sale, you wanna see if you can get there, your nearer to Stafford in the Midlands than what I am, I'm gonna be there for the whole weekend as I'm meeting people from all over England, Scotland and Ireland and is gonna be a very busy day for me.
Have a look in this weeks cage and avairy paper or google national Stafford for all info :-BD

Far better to get the canaries from now onwards and anytime during the winter, this is the normal time to purchase em
Really thanks I may be seeing you there then I’ll have a look into it and I was gonna get canarys in spring because my breeder has red ones that are during moly and said when he feeds them there food to make them red he will seell then in spring

Fraza

I'm going with wilkifam and Gracie85 on this one. It's for the best that the budgies have their own cage. A budgie's beak can do a lot of damage to a finch. Budgies are also quite territorial about their choice roosting spots.

Hookbills and finches should never be kept together.
