Worms in the seed!

Post by albert » Tue Jun 19, 2007 6:02 am

Hey guys, just a short question if any of you experience this:

I found some seed-eating worms in my feeder (it's a seed and pellets mixture), wonder if I should throw away the seed or let my gouldians continue eating the seed (and the worms)

Now my Gouldians start breeding and hopefully I will have some little guys soon.

I would toss it! If you're also seeing webbing in the seed they'll become seed moths - I'm still fighting to get those out of my house.

Yet another reason to feed pellets. Who's ever heard of a pellet-moth?

You can safely feed it...the worms are a tasty bonus for the birds...

However...since you don't want the moths running rampant in your pantry...so freeze the seed to kill them...48 hours in the freezer should do it... :D
A bird in the hand...requires some serious washing up...

I have read Rue's advise in quite a few places.

Keep in mind that freezing kills the worms but not the eggs, so once the seed is warmed up again the eggs will still hatch...... At least, that's what I've read.
