My understanding of certain licensing requirements for raising or keeping certain species, whether bird, mammals or others is found in many countries and In the U.S. Here in America, certain states have laws that residents cannot own native species of birds or other local wildlife. For example, if I found a fledgling mockingbird, the state bird of Texas, it would be illegal to keep that fledge as a pet bird. If I found a Society finch, maybe one that escaped, I could keep that finch because it is not a native species. They are trying to protect local residents from catching and selling native species of animals, birds, etc, in order to keep local eco systems stable.

I love that - "when you do something you love, it's not work" great frame of mind to havefinchmix22 wrote: That's great news! I know you'll enjoy keeping up with two aviaries!! Just think of all the extra cleaning that goes with all those lovely songs and colors! LOL. Just kidding. I get lots of flack from family about "Why do you keep so many finches?" or "That's too much work." etc. etc. etc.
I just chuckle and say, "You know how much joy I get from them. When you do something you love, it's not work."![]()

Re: Guess What ????- Guess What ????
Thanks for clarifying the license thingy. I honestly don't know what the laws are here in canada in regards to native birds.
You mean that the slightly broken baby sparrow I rescued all those years ago might have gotten me in trouble with the bird police???
. When he got better, I let him go, and for months he came back and would sit on my window ledge and sing. After that I don't know what happened to him, but I hope he took up with a little mate and lived to raise many happy babies.

What do they do in an inspection Rox?Rox wrote: lovezebs
Just for info, like in Australia you need a permit/license for keeping indigenous birds, it's the same here in SA. I had my inspection done in January, so I'm now all legal to keep/breed/sell indigenous SA species. Getting them to breed successfully though, is a whole other story![]()

Toddmin My family are the same, my kids think I have gone batty. Especially when I had cages on the kitchen table pair bonding them up and there was no room to sit and eat, sorry !! don't disturb the birds please !! Lucky they only visit every now and then
lovezebs I totally agree, it is the best therapy I have ever had and I have had lots of therapy. I wake up happy because I am going out to sit with the birds and I go to bed happy because I have spent the day with the birds. You just have to love those little fluff balls don't you !!

Re: Guess What ????- Guess What ????
Yup, I had a full inspection done by a Cape Nature inspector. Each aviary was measured, each bird (both indigenous and not) recorded and the inspector even had a look at what I was feeding and using for nesting. For the indigenous species, I have to keep a register of births, deaths etc. When selling these birds, I need to apply for a transit permit and then the buyer applies for a captivity permit. Of all my birds, only the Red Headed finches and BB Cordon Bleu's are indigenous to SA. The rest are from Northern Africa (imports/domestically bred) or my gorgeous Australian Gouldians
It's a pain in the bum but also a good thing. For example, my Red Headed finches I bought completely illegally from a pet shop. They should never have been sold without a permit and by buying them, it encourages illegal trapping. I'm just doing my small bit to keep it legal.
Ps. I love cleaning my aviaries! The birds also love it, as they follow me around checking out to see what I have unearthed for them to eat. Cleaning and feeding times are definitely my favourite times to get up close and personal with them. If you avoid eye contact and just carry on your business, it's quite amazing how much they get used to you being in there with them

Lol, I was also rather nervous at first, then I realised that the inspector only had basic knowledge and with only 5 of them to 'police' the whole province, I was going to be fine. I have know idea how they actually do keep track with so few inspector's but at least I know I did my bit. I also had the help if monotwine who told me what to expect

Re: Guess What ????- Guess What ????
chirpy Yeh it was an easy guess I suppose, but sorry I cant give you a million !!!
The new aviary means I wont have any birds inside and I can thin out my other aviary a bit and grab a couple more pairs then NO MORE BIRDS FOR ME !!!!
I am very happy with my collection so far, I got everything I wanted on my "To get" list so my plan is nearly complete.
It just means I have to split my time between the two aviaries when I do my bird watching throughout the day.
It is coming on Tuesday and then we have to set it up which will take a few more days, and as you said, we don't have the weather to contend with now which will help so much. Day by day it will all come together
