Elana, to answer the question you asked Smurf. 2 Pairs most likely won't life peacefully in a flight. I have just 5 RTPF's in a large 3 meter X 1.8 X 1.8 aviary, 2 males and 3 females. The dominant male chase the others around. I have a dominant female as well and she chases all females that gets too close to her mate.

Pied = This is a dominant mutation. This is where only one bird has to have the gene for it to be reproduced.
You will have 50% of your young visually show the mutation.
Some young in a nest of pied birds will show broad splashes of yellow feather some have a few and some have none.
Birds with a Pied father and a Normal mother may leave the nest with no pied marking until after 2 or 3 moults.
The Pied Red Faced Parrot Finch is an unstable Pied Pattern which changes and increases with age. This type of behaviour is known by the term "Progressive Pied."
An accepted indicator of pied is a yellow beak or mandible in nestlings.
Others state that the colour of the toes can be an indicator - the lighter the toes the greater the chance of the youngster being pied.
You can breed heavy pieds from two light pied, and it does not necessarily follow that two heavy pieds mated together would give you a full nest of heavy pieds. In other words, mate any two pieds together and be prepared for anything, sit back and hope for the best.

One is a Red Head Green Body (age unknown)
One is this new boy, Red Headed, Pied Body (age unknown)
Male #1 I tried to breed him with my females, with no results. He was so aggressive with them, that they ended up sitting all fluffed and plucked and half dead on the flight floor. There were never any fertile eggs, although I watched him mating with them on numrrous occasions. In all reality, I don't think he gave them any time for eggs, too busy chasing them. Finally it was a matter of pull him out, or lose my females. I pulled him
I think he might possibly be too old.
Male#2 My new boy. I don't know how old he is, but if they become more pied with age (?), then I am thinking he's not a youngster either (plus the fact that I am his fourth owner, poor little guy). Jerry (Big Bear), only had him for a few weeks. Inge, had him for about six months. The owners before her, I don't know.
I would like to try and breed him to one of my girls (he can have his pick) and see if they can lay viable eggs and raise some beautiful chicks. However, the dilema is, he is not in the best of shape at the moment, and I'd like to build him up, before putiing him into a breeding/chick rearing scenario. Then again, I'm concerned that if he's already older, I might miss the window of opportunity ......
Hard decision. Any thoughts?

I was told at the bird mart this past weekend that once parrot finches turn three, they can no longer breed, or maybe they can still breed, but the eggs would be infertile. I can't remember....how long do you think it would take to build him back up?
