And that being said... when I went down the street to get the bowls to go into the breeding box, I spotted the lone little charcoal Zebra that was left at the store... so I grabbed her.
And here she is

When I picked up the male for the other hen we got last week, I thought that she was a juvenile cock because of her red beak. And if you look at the charcoal hen behind her, her beak is much darker than the other ones.
And this is our pure white cock. I am thinking of trying to pair him with one of the charcoals to see what I can get

I am thinking of trying to pair his brother (the saddleback pied) with the other charcoal hen.

Gee whiz they are busy with the egg laying!! Good luck with them. I have two zebbies, but they're both male - I got sick of having eggbound female finches and canaries.
It killed me to have them put down.
Yours a really sweet

Thanks
I think that to stop having eggbound females, use shell grit, egg shells, or cuttlefish shells. I went to the beach when my nieces and nephew were staying with us, found some cuttlefish on the beach, brought it home and put it in the aviary and they went nuts over it

I love the look of the charcoal and the red. And I definitely like the sound of Calico. I am sure it is what we call pied. blah!

I am certain that it is a pied... I just think that their colouring looks a lot more like the colouring that you would see on a calico cat

Hello Dramoth,
I tried the egg shells, and calcium (via the cuttlefish) but it didn't work. I realised too late that the issue was due to a lack of vitamin D (I add this to my birds' seed via a supplement now). My vet told me this, and said its a common issue with birds kept inside. Yours are very sweet though. My two boys like nesting, though they keep pulling all the nesting material out and sleep in a naked nest! Go figure!
They do build fairly crappy nests out of bits of grass, twigs etc (I provide for them to play with!). They are great stress busters. I sit with my birds every day - my Zebbies free fly but my star finch is too old and can't fly much, but he has a very roomy flight cage. Birds are great therapy!
Kind Regards
Zebrafincher.

Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. You're birds can get vitamin D from hard boiled eggs and calcium from the egg shells.

Had 2 new kids jump out of the nest yesterday, and the other 3 all launched out today.
So 5 new kids have joined the flock with about 6-7 more hatched over the last week.
