lovezebs Thanks for sharing! If these little ones make it to hatching day, they will be the smallest birds I've had to handfeed. Before now, the smallest I've hand fed from probably about day 5 was a house finch! All others have been starling size or larger.
The eggs are still alive by the way! There are two confirmed alive. The suspected blastocyst with no embryo was starting to darken, so I threw it out. I opened it first to confirm, and it was indeed just a clear bubble with no growing fetus inside.
I've got my incubator to stabilize at a constant 37.5, although I still have to wake up and feed my paranoia-beast every half hour just in case. I'm adding a drop of water to the bottom of the incubator away from the nest so that it gets steamy, but not moist.
I'm planning to not candle for a few days, since they're at a critical stage of development and I don't want to rupture the membrane by accident until the connections get a little stronger, but I'll keep you posted!
I can't believe they've made it this far, and I've already learned a ton from them, so even if they don't make it, their tiny lives improved mine by heaps and I can apply my experience later!
2 black cheek zebras and 5 CFW zebras, one A&M pied coturnix hen, my darling cream/lavender coturnix roo, and his attitude.
