Lovely canaries Ken! I succumbed to the temptation yesterday and purchased a Border canary from a knowledgeable person. He is lovely and singing already.

I don't have him in with my gang, but have him in his own cage. He can see everyone. If I get a large flight cage like Steve Pax or a gorgeous set up like Ken has I might be able to put him in with the flock. :P

Someday I'll have a canary, for the singing. I'm just not sure when. Someday.

:P This is such an addictive hobby! I'm so pleased with my canary, whom I call Legolas Greenleaf after the elf in the Fellowship of the Ring. I've been a Tolkien fiend for thirty years and the name just fits this bird.

I do recommend going to a reputable breeder. My guy is so friendly that he will hop onto my hand!

I'm used to the German roller canary song but Legolas's song is very pleasant and chirpy. My gosh....everyone is singing in the living room...even Shakti the Strawberry finch!

Hoji, male canaries run at least $100 each in my area. It would be worth it to spend a little time at that pet shop and see if you can catch one singing, and then buy that one--that is a fabulous price for a male canary. It may take some time, but if the shop employee heard singing, there is at least one male in there.

And a local hospital has an aviary in their lobby, with various finches plus one canary.

my male canaries sing the most when i am vacuuming, as soon as i turn it on in my birdroom the males all start siging and they always seem to be competing....the borders have the deepest song ,but just watching the rollers make me laugh as they get right into it and they lift one foot up ata time as they sing as if the perch is too hot for there feet! i have heard a lot of finches sing but you really cant beat a canaries song especailly in the spring when they have all just come through the molt they all seem to start at the same time

Legolas - my daughter (21 years) will love to hear that - she is a big Tolkien fan!!!

Yeah, I thought the prices were great too. That is one reason why I hadn't seriously considered canaries before, they are never under $100 around here too, and why I suddenly had a thought to try for a pair and maybe breed them. I less concerned about finding homes for canaries. And these birds look really good. I probably better not wait to long.

I went to look again last evening. I think I found a male, if not she sings pretty anyway. They are holding him/her for me. I'll go get him/her this evening and just get a small cage (that will make 3!) to quarenteen (sp?) him/her in. The really hard part now will be coming home without the pretty light orange one too.

I brought my 'adoptee' home today! He's taking it all in stride! :D

Haven't heard him sing yet, but he's been chirping!

Is he pictured in your avatar?

Nice looking canary. I love the soft yellows.

Yay! More canary people! Are we allowed to post about them here? 8)

I am in the back office and Legolas Greenleaf has been singing since five this morning. He likes to watch me work at the kitchen counter ( my living room, kitchen and dining are all one area). He peeks over the sides of the cage at me. :)
