I would imagine that adoption fees vary due to shelter/rescue circumstances. Unfortunately, not all rescues are reliable or ethical. The one in Rochester is and does a super job with rehoming birds that have had either a very bad past or been deemed "aggressive". Thankfully - their fees are very reasonable for me but I know that they can use donations so I give extra when I can.

Sometimes your local humane society will get in birds....you might want to leave word with yours so that if they get any calls about people wanting to drop off finches they can be referred to you.

eeee....can you imagine those poor keets? Yow.

So far I've just worked with the rescue for obtaining my bird friends. I'm a little afraid that if I let people know locally that I take in unwanted finches that I'd be overrun!

I suppose I could put several cages in the bedroom  .

:D I have two finch cages in my bedroom (opposite sides of the room about 20' apart) and another in the attached bathroom as they are all new and in quarantine. When they pass quarantine time - they get to join the rest of the fids in the birdroom downstairs.

What beautiful finches! Do you have 35 birds, or 35 finches? We used to have 4 budgies, but will be getting 2 zebras pretty soon. We also have 4 hamsters and used to have 4 dogs, 7 rabbits, 2 fish, and many chickens! But since we moved to San Jose, we don't have chickens anymore... :(

There is a local shelter around here but they don't have birds. None of the shelters around here have birds. It's because of how birds need special care and the shelters just can't do it..unfortunately.

I have one canary and the rest are finches. I just love the little ones.

I often wonder in places where there are no rescues for finches what happens to them. Our Town recycling center man had a finch land on his shoulder over at the dump and he was able to catch it and now has finches himself.

Whoa, you have many little birds! Lucky you! At the moment, I have zero. :-({|=

I do wonder the same thing...hopefully, rescues will take in birds soon.

wow 150.00 adoption fee! yikes...I would not pay that. I have adopted out several animals in my life time and only now see the newly fashioned "rehoming fees" advertised. I personally never asked a dime for any animal I have rehomed, never...what is up with all these fess? People are crazy to think anyone would pay this or similar imo.

Rita

personally have adopted out 4 horses all ridable and sound, a dog, pot bellie pig, and long story there but she got a great home, hubby had a odd moment and bought her, and that's it. In return been given several horses without adoption fees, a dog, 3 barn kittens, and now a society finch. Do plants count? lolol....

The rehoming fees have come about because places like craigslist don't let you sell 'live' pets, so people advertise them for a rehoming fee to get around the rules. It is silly, really, they should just go ahead and let people say they are selling their bird, dog, cat, whatever. Someone recently on our local craigslist fussed at a person for the 'rehoming fee' they were asking for their Gouldians, thought it was way too high. What they were asking is the going rate for Gouldians, but many people think if it is on craigslist, it should be free or nearly so. Another person advertised that they were looking for Gouldians for their children, but they didn't expect to have to pay much for them. Well, most Gouldian breeders are in it to make a little money and can't afford to give them away.

And it is a little like the price some shelters charge for the dogs and cats they are trying to 'rehome'. They make it high enough that people who adopt will have some money invested in it from the start and will be more likely to keep and care for the animal.

Sally.....our Craigslist Pets has some Vicious flaggers on there and hardly anybody can post any animal without getting flagged. Many have gone over to hoobly.com or kijiji.com to post their animals where they can't get flagged.

Even when somebody asks politely why did they get flagged...that question just gets flagged. It is so sad...these pets can't get listed to find a home. :(

I personally think that's a dumb rule. For the people who do not have access to an animal shelter and don't want to buy their pets from pet shops, they can still, in a way, "adopt" their pets by taking/buying them from a person who can no longer take care of that pet. It's still considered adopting. Using craigslist, they can do this but craigslist just doesn't understand.

You're right, Laura, craigslist just doesn't get it. There was a recent posting in my area, someone rehomed some ferrets, with tons of supplies, all for free. The person who took the ferrets and all the supplies turned around and advertised them on craigslist for a big rehoming fee! So it doesn't always pay to give away pets. I'd rather be able to charge a decent fee so that they will hopefully go to a good home. Freebies are often resold, or discarded.

How rude is that! So many people treat animals like objects..it's so irritating.

How does everyone feel on selling pets in pet shops?
