Aw, poor mama.

I'm glad you found her and that she died in a cozy nest vs terrified in your house.

That explains the babies fledgling too soon. Mama got sick and left and they fledged looking for food. So sad.

Fly free, little Gleam and babies.

Beautiful picture of Gleam's babies! I don't think I could ever sell any Goldbreast babies. These birds are so sweet to watch and admire.

For half a second I thought they might be firefinches, because I've never seen an adult gold breast feeding them, but they are definitely goldbreasted. I have to say he's done a fabulous job of raising them since they fledged, and they look to him for groceries. I find it interesting that their real dad never fed them outside the nest. I can only attribute it to the loss of his mate, their mom, and that the firefinch is feeding them because he and his mate had just had a clutch that got tossed by someone (they were being fed) when I found her dead. Just such a strange set of circumstances.

It shows you how harsh and beautiful and generous Mother Nature can be all in one amazing story, :-k

I'm just glad at least some of the babies made it. It could have gone south very fast if it weren't for that sweet little firefinch.
Goodness, you'd never think a macaw crash landing into a cage could cause such devastation.

Three out of five. Not great, but it's better than half and three more than I had to start with.

Hi Karen.

They are lovely. Looks like step Dad has been doing a great job.

It still blows me away that that firefinch is feeding those babies. I was watching them tonight follow him around. He has to go down to the floor of the flight to feed them, because, in general, GBWs enjoy hanging out down there in the hay. He hops down there with them, and they all circle around. They have started picking at seeds on their own, but they are not yet independent.

Funny you mentioned that.
I have noticed my trio of Goldbreasts (2males, 1 female), like to sit on the floor of the cage as well, and take in the world.

At first I was concerned that there was something wrong with them . Then I realized that they just enjoyed sitting that way, shoulder to shoulder and looking around.

I have tried to snap a picture of them like that (because they look absolutely adorable), but the minute they see the 'evil' camera, they fly into the rafters, or into the plants in this case.

In the wild Goldbreasts spend a great deal of time on the ground, so it's normal for them. That's part of the reason I put hay on the floor of my flight. I think they actually build their nests pretty low, as well. The last nest they built, they used the hay instead of the coco fiber.

Well, we'll have to wait and see what my trio decide to do. I hope they don't decide to build right on the ground floor. That would be murder for cage clean ups. :-D
