Now I need to remember and I may get it wrong, but I think the male should have a little orange under his tail and the hens don't....
Otherwise near impossible to tell apart.

Now the trick is, to get them all to bend over, so that I can compare their tooshies, lol. These guys never sit still for more than a second at a time, and those little tails never stop moving... making you go cross eyed if you watch them long enough

Congrats Elana, they are gorgeous! Still my favorite waxbill

Males will have much more orange on their vent, while the hens have almost a cream colored vent, with only a touch of orange. Cheek patches aren't very reliable as I have one hen that has bigger and brighter cheek patches than her mate. Also, only the males will sing and dance. Put some white feathers in and see what reaction you get

Oh dear, now all my birds think I'm a lurking pervert....

I sat there for over half an hour, trying to peek under these little guy's tails, sigh....

In thanks, I have a creak in my neck, none of my birds will turn their backs on me, and are looking at mw kinda funny , and I'm pretty sure that three are girls, and one (the tiniest ) is a male MAYBE, and that's a big maybe, as I couldn't get a really good look. Sheeesh.....

The things we do... good grief

The three fuzzy butts that I did manage to observe, are kind of a goldy shade, while the fourth one may (or may not) be a wee bit darker shade.
