To disinfect wild branches, you can clean them and bake them in the oven at about 200 degrees. I'm not sure how long is necessary, but I usually do one hour, then turn the oven off and let them cool in there.

Fraza My neighborhood birds are filthy little tramps and the local bird haters have stopped me from feeding them so I can't de-louse the riff-raff. If the branches are small, I know I can freeze and bake, I wonder if I can find some info on sanitizing big ones!

Finnie What if they won't fit in my oven? I wonder if wrapping them in fabric and pouring boiling water over them would do it. I need to get some agar so I can test it, but I have searched 3 stores in my area and so far have found none.

Fraza I wonder if I can seriously just scrub them with soap and water and that would be enough to kill mold and parasites? I am way too paranoid with my birds, lol.

MisterGribs

If you have a dry place to store branches, perhaps you could leave some to dry for a few weeks/months? I suppose that would be a waste of space, though.

Or maybe you could put the branches in a tub with water, add a bit of bleach, and let them soak. Then they should only need a few days afterward to air out.
