Sally-- That's just sick. I hate people sometimes.
My two cents-- I paid $130 to take the Javas I got yesterday. It might seem like a lot, but I don't regret it one bit; they are in a better place and I will truly enjoy them and care for them. I got their cage as well, which was far too small for 8 birds, and it took some serious work to get into shape but it all was well worth it.
I adopted seven finches today!

Yes, $130 is a lot of money to pay to rescue some birds, but another perspective is that it works out to about $16 per bird, which I'm sure is a bargain price for Javas, so in the long run, it is a win-win for you and the birds. The cage can maybe be used for a hospital or quarantine cage, or hey, you could sell it on craigslist!
Laura, as far as selling pets in pet shops, my objection is to where many of them come from. You don't know if you are buying puppy-mill pets. My personal preference for dogs and cats is to visit a shelter (though in reality, only one of my dogs came from a shelter, and none of the cats--most of them just showed up, were picked up, or were given to me).

I agree 100%. I also believe that the animals there should get better living conditions. Yes, I do realize that they might only be there a couple of days before they get bought, but still..the hamsters/mice/rats at my PetCo basically live in tissue boxes.

I'm a hamster freak and I'm loving it! Currently loving 3 hammies.

The cage I got in the deal is a hospital cage now, and it's true that if you divide it up I did get a good deal for 8 Javas; even if some of them are pretty sad.
I went to Petsmart for something today and their finches are so sad. They have a Gould that has been there for ages and is just fluffed up and all alone. I wish I could rescue every sad animal I saw, but unless I suddenly come across massive amounts of money I could never do it. It's very sad to see the conditions people put animals into, but I guess you have to pick your battles.

I will give the PetsMart and Petco stores credit for the fact that they do not sell dogs and cats, just have adoptions. Some of the family-owned small pet shops that carry dogs and cats have such a stench when you walk in the door, I can't imagine that they don't realize what a turnoff that is. Birds in both large and small stores are the ones I see problems with--overcrowded cages, feather-plucked birds left to be further maimed. I wish the pet industry as a whole could be more regulated as far as living conditions go.
