Finches on Airplanes
Does anyone know if you can take finches on planes with you as 'carry on' or something? I think I've seen people carry small dogs with them before...

You have to check with the airline you want to use--they are all different with pet rules. Most of them have some provision for small dogs and cats, but beyond that, you almost have to get a ruling from their passenger service department. The few that mention birds restrict them to one bird (I think they are thinking larger birds), and it doesn't occur to them someone might want to bring a flock of finches on board! Also, the scare over bird flu presents more problems.
I thought about it myself, combining a vacation with a bird-buying trip, saving the cost of shipping, but it seems to be pretty difficult to do. If anyone has carried birds on the plane, please let us all know how it went.

I carried on my Indian Ringneck parrot from Ft. Myers to Chicago August of 2006 and it was a SINCH!
I got a Cabin Kennel http://www.birdsupplies.com/Cabin-Kenne ... -21060.htm I think I got the medium size. You can find these at Petco and such stores, though.
Put a perch in and a covered dish in it to put wet fruits in. I also took a baggie of Mango and grapes (wet food = food + water ;) ) This is the dish: http://www.petco.com/product/15420/Insi ... n-Cup.aspx
Paper towels on the bottom and changed them out in the terminal bathrooms when needed.
Labeled the top of the cage with his name, my name, address, phone #, ETC.
$50 dollars each way (too bad he never made it back
) to stow him under the seat right by my feet.
I'm sure you can do the same with finches if you can handle them. Usually when going through security, they make you carry the animal through with you.
