well. as i am working on my new aviary i had decided i wanted to implement a few tricks (some for my enjoyment and some for the birds)
i wanted to created a sunrise and sunset, with dimming lights. and thermostatically control heat. and also control the night light. this seems all so easy right? not when you want it all done from one unit.
i started searching online for resources to do this... and came across these guys http://ecozonevivarium.com
though designed for reptile it will work for us and do much much more. tony the owner/operator of the company is one of the nicest guys i have ever communicated with... and he was surprised that these would be useful outside of the reptile market.
all software updates are free, you can control it via computer, or via internet while you are anywhere else in the world. as well as monitor your temps and light cycle for the entire year.
it can be programmed with a lunar cycles for the entire year so you can modify a breeding schedule.
apon speaking to tony he said he has no issue adding features that are requested by users in future updates.
i'm in no way affiliated with this company, just wanted to share my findings... this unit is amazing as far as i can tell and cant wait til it gets here.
as far as other units for the reptile and aquatic industry, this one does way more at a fraction of the cost. so there really isn't a comparison.
take the time to check it out. if your as picky as i am about how my birds wake up each day, this might be a solution for you too!
thought i would share this wih you all.

WOW, such a novel, yet rational, idea. I can't wait to see pictures when you get it all set up. I'm impressed.

Bummer. I'm new here. Hoping to get back into aviculture and into Gouldians, but I want to do it right. Had a Canary for nearly 14 years so not my first foray.

Look at the thread " cage artificial lighting " page 2, Debbie has put up a link of two very good articles about bird lightingGouldianGuy wrote: Bummer. I'm new here.
