Spice Finches
Besides blowing on the birds crotch, is there another way to tell a male Spice finch from a female?

I have never heard that blowing on the birds crotch does anything but gives you a life long friend!! And neighbors that think you're kind of weird!
Some people say that the male has a darker beak, or that the male has more spots on their crest. I personally find that the males bite more and harder then the females - which is just as good as blowing at their personal area! The only sure way is to have them sexed. Sorry I couldn't help by your Post was so cutie I felt someone should answer you! Good Luck. *Blaze*

I didn't believe it either, but this breeder in Webster, FL does it. I imagine he has lots of friends. hahaha He correctly sexed my Society finches, but he is an hour away and I don't want to have to drive them that far. I will closely look them over tonight and see if I can see anything you mentioned. Thank you.

As far as I'm concerned spice finches are just like societies - boys eventually (hopefully) sing, and girls (maybe) lay eggs. I have a pair that's a brother and maybe sister (no breeding, obviously). He sings all the time, but the other has neither sung nor laid any eggs. By default, "she" is the "sister" until proven otherwise!
