I adopted seven finches today!

Oh..I'm very pleased. I was approved to adopt seven finches today from our area bird rescue.
There are three red faced Star Finches and four Lady Gouldians. These birds were a transfer from another rescue and I picked them up today.
They are just lovely birds, and settling in their own cage with a variety of seed choices and fresh greens. I'm looking forward to learning about what special requirements these birds have as to diet and care and hope that they will enjoy my home.
This brings the bird count in the house to 35!
Oooh....as I type in the back office I can hear the male Gouldian singing! Pretty!

I love to support the area bird rescue. They really do a great job with the big birds and don't get too many finches in. When they do get finches in they find not many want to adopt so I've been there a couple of times to adopt. My first finch adoption was 15 zebras! heh heh
My home is TINY - total 728 square feet. The birdies are all in cages in the living room and dining area (in the windows on shelves!).
I didn't mean to go this wacky but I just love the little birds!

How awesome!!! I never thought of going to a shelter for finches....
That's a lot of bird for that space...I live in about 400sgft and if it weren't for my fiance I would def have more birds and bigger cages.
I'm envious!

Wow, that's a great selection of birds--I just love my Stars. There isn't a shelter in my area that ever has finches, that I know of. I think there are a few parrot rescue places, but they only deal with hookbills. I have noticed that people are posting birds on craigslist. You aren't supposed to sell pets on craigslist, so people just list them for rehoming and then put the price as a rehoming fee. In fact, I have gotten several birds recently from craigslist: I got a Strawberry hen and male Shaft-tail, both in excellent condition, but the lady was a knowledgeable breeder of Gouldians. I recently got a male Strawberry, which was sort of a rescue. Not a rescue price, that's for sure, but he was living all by himself in a tiny, tiny cage--I just couldn't leave him. Maybe it's a good thing none of these nearby shelters have finches--I'd probably be up to my eyeballs in birds!

I seem to remember a picture of your bird room/area of your house and you live up to your name plantsandbirds! Speaking of pics... where's the pics of the new adoptees? Congrats on getting them too, that's so nice that you have the freedom to do that.

Plantsandbirds....what kinds of questions do they ask you during the approval process? Hopefully nothing too personal!
I also got some birds from Craigslist...but here in MN they are so flag happy the birds, dogs and even cats are getting flagged off for no good reason and now they are getting listed on Hoobly and KiJiJi where they can't get flagged and removed. But that's a whole nuther story!

The application process is very extensive. There are requirements as to housing, vet care and committment, as well as the adoption contract states that the adopter will not be breeding the birds. This is pretty standard practice for adoptions. I provided photographs, met with the rescue owner and part of the contract requirements are that she or a representative can visit any time with no notice to assure that the birds are cared for properly.
I wouldn't have it any other way. Here are a few of the adoptees...
The following photo is what is now the canary and where some of the adoptees live. In this photo my sweet parakeets were still in residence.

Plantsandbirds....I Love your little birdie alcove. I see they get the best view out the window...hehe!
Your Gouldians are lovely.
Wow...I guess they really make sure you are a good Finch Mom before allowing them to go home with you. I wish the pet stores were that cautious and caring. For all this you have to go through what fee do they charge...if I may be so Nosy and Bold.
I also love your Grandfather clock...absolutely gorgeous! I have one too that Hubby made from a kit it is called a "Grandmother" clock. It hasn't worked for years now!
How do your birdies react to the clock chimes?

Someday I may want to have my windows back! The birds really like to look out and see the wild birds - unless the hawk flies in...then they duck!
My uncle made the clock from a kit from the Emperor Clock Company. It was something he always wanted to do. I inherited it when he passed and it is like he is here with me everytime it chimes. It has a lovely low tone and the birdies don't make a flutter - even the new ones.
I meant to mention that most adoption forms - including the bird rescue one - has you list any and all pets that you had, what happened to them and etc.... There is also a veterinarian referral/check and the rescue makes sure that the bird you are adopting is one that you can take care of and understand the needs of that bird.
The fees vary. This time the rescue lady asked for a certain amount and I wrote a check for double that. She needs the support. Her adoption fees range from $10.00 per small bird up to hundreds for her larger macaws and cockatoos. Very reasonable considering the birds go for hundreds and even thousands around here.
Knowing this rescue has made me very aware that buying birds in a pet store, especially the big box stores, is not so good for the birds. I TRY to adopt all of my birds. Initially my first two zebs were pet store purchases. Most rescues will also take the birds/animals back and try to rehome them if you are unable to keep then due to any circumstances. That is a wonderful plus!
