Lost a finch to my blind cat

It's unbelievable.

I have a blind cat who's about 11 years old, she's not doing well, recently she's gone blind and she previously had an accident where she fell from the 2nd floor balcony and just last week she suffers from strong constipation and high blood pressure.

She's the only cat I let into the rooms that have my birds because not for one second I thought she'd ever be a threat - I spend hours with the birds while she's around and not ONCE she even cared to come close to their cages.

We were told that it's best not to move her around and it's good if she picks a favorite spot so we could have her food and water close by and she'd have no trouble reaching them - she picked a spot right next to the flight cage that holds my pintail whydah pair.

For days she showed absolutely no interest in the birds, but just 3 hours ago I went in and there she was chewing the male's wings and that was all what's left of him.

My heart sank, just this morning I was thinking of putting him with my shafts and separate him from his female as I read that this reduces their aggression but it was too late.

I had to post this as a warning, this was an 11 year old blind cat with health problems and the finches were still not safe around her.

I feel terribly guilty for allowing her in that room :(

Oh no, I'm so sorry about the loss of your bird :( . I understand your feeling of guilt, I too have lost birds that I thought were safe. Thank you for the warning, I know that had to be painful.

OMG How horrific for that poor bird. And sad for you,
Cats are a part of my rescue work And I must say in NO circumstances do cats and birds mix,

hopefully you can find a new place for the cat to be cozy,,,

Oh that is so awful for you (and the bird). I'm very sorry to hear about it and I have to agree that cats and birds NEVER mix.

The cats instinct will kick in at some point - they can't help it. It would be like telling a fish to not swim. I have cats and dogs as well as my finches and parrots. My dogs and cats are never allowed into the birdroom.

I am so sorry. It must be horrible to see something like that. Don't feel guilty though, it's not your fault.

Sorry,...... But i'm a bit confused here :-k
How in the world could a blind cat catch a bird #-o

The cat may have been blind but perhaps not 100% blind and even if it was totally blind it could (probably) still hear quite well. Hearing a bird flutter around (and chirp or sing) is not difficult to pinpoint when you stay still and listen carefully.

Bonzo, it is definitely puzzling and if I haven't seen her chewing his wings next to the cage I wouldn't believe it either. But just like L mentioned (and my vet), she's got excellent hearing capabilties and that was obviously all she needed to catch him.
