Funniest thing

My finches share a divided flight cage with my pair of Bourke's parakeets. Though my parakeets are extremely easy going and sedentary there is a divider in place to keep them apart from the finches.
I had just finished filling the feeders for the finches a few minutes ago. Jaws, the juvenile gouldian, was sitting on a perch near my head doing that 'peep peep' call they do...and my male Bourkes Fiyero was doing the exact same call back.
Well, I thought it was funny, at any rate

That IS funny! Next he'll be doing the Gouldian song--wonder if he'll puff out his chest, too.

I would so crack up if he started singing like Clyde, or even doing that little 'beep beep' song that the male societies do.
I went back out and was whistling at him like I do with my tiels. Sometimes when I do that he'll start singing back, but this time he just made his grumpy growly sound...a sound he usually only reserves for when I have to catch him to do his nails or move him into a new cage.
It was like me: 'whistle whistle'
Him: 'growl'
'whistle'
'growl'
'whistle'
'growl'
I know he was thinking 'shut up already, first the darn finches, now you!'

LOL....wish I could have seen that in person.
I sometimes think my female Gouldian gets jealous of the male talking to me because when we are "talking" to each other the female comes up to the male and pecks at him...hehe.

When I was a kid our family had a canary and a parakeet. The parakeet could imitate all of the basic peeps of the canary but Marcus also said "CHEEP".

I think with time I could probably get Fiyero to say a word or two. Bourkes aren't really big talkers, but he seems to have an affinity for interaction and obviously for some level of mimicry since he's copying Jaws. I think if I was ever able to manage to get either one of them hand-tame (they're utterly terrified of me unless there are bars between us) it would be him.

plantsandbirds, that is very cute! My budgies made sounds quite like this also, but it wasn't very clear what they said.
