How many people let their finches out of the cage?

Just curious.

I let mine out now, but I've had to train them to stay off the floor, off lamps and pictures.

In fact, the only places they are allowed to fly to and rest on are the cages.

I have cats, and there is no way I would let the finches feel they have the run of the house. They don't. One bit of carelessness on my part, and my cats could be adding finch to their diet.

Obviously, they are never let out unsupervised.

I do not let my finches out of their cages because I have parrots in the same birdroom. If I had a separate room just for the finches then I would let them out.

But one has escaped now and then on occasion when I'm trying to clip their nails or whatever and I always go after it ASAP so the parrots don't get it. They (the finches) inveratbly land on the parrots cages sooner or later, but luckily the parrots have just sat there enjoying the show. "Oh look at mommy chasing that tiny thing. Fly little one - we want to see mom run some more!"

yeah, I let my parakeets out at the same time, and they are totally puzzled by them. Of course, the finches go into their cages and steal their food.

My sister lets her finchies out and they're fine.

I can't let mine out because of how open my apt plan is...too many places for them to fall behind(the fridge, the stove...places like that). One day I'll let them out when I get into a different place.

when i had my finches in my bedroom, i use to let them out when i was cleaning there cages and they would usually stay on top of the ceiling fan.the only trouble is getting back in the cage. Sometimes i would just leave them and they would go back to the cage by themselves. nhow that there outside i let them fly around in the small room in the garage when i clean the cage. sometimes i take them out just to let them have more room to fly.

Finches? never unless they escaped. larger birds yes finches no, they are so small they can hide in wierd spots lol

I used to. But she had to move into a smaller cage becuase of the parakeets. ANd now I can't but I feel bad.

Never (except for when they escape, of course). They're too likely to fly into walls and windows, and are buggers to get back in their cages.

Never either. Years ago, I had a Zebra escape and it flew into the closet door HARD and broke it's neck and died immediately.

We actually have a screened-in patio that we have made into an "indoor aviary". It has windows also on 3 sides and I open and close them depending on the weather. The 4th side is a sliding glass door that we leave open unless we have company or the a/c on. We live in Ft. Lauderdale and the weather has been exceptionally nice this year so we have been able to have the sliding glass door open a lot. Our condo fills with song as the 2 canaries go at it in the morning. lol

I open all the cage doors in the morning when I feed them and they all fly around in there until evening. Then once everyone gets settled in for the night I lock all the doors. It's funny because my Gouldians just watch for me to open the blinds and the sliding glass door and then go hesterical as if saying, "let us out already!!" There is really nothing else in the "indoor aviary" except two large cages and a hanging wicker lamp which they love. I have really made it quite bird proof.

I have mine also in a sun room flying freely. I have large planted trees for them. They love to get into the trees. My courdon blues stay in there and hide all day.
I have a few cages in there with the doors open and they like to go into the cage sometime for some "time out". I leave the screen door open into the sunroom and I have never had one to hit a glass window yet.
I hope I never do.
Sometimes when I introduce a new bird or babies fledge, they will bump the window, but it hasn't been hard and no one has got hurt. I also have some shade I let down when I put new birds in until they get used to the boundaries.

The only time mine have been out is when they excape. One of my yellow checks got out today, boy is he fast. I had to turn off all the lights except the bathroom. and when he went in there I closed the door and finally cought him. I told him he was a bad boy and to sit in the corner of his cage till he learns better. He didn't mind then either oooooooooooooo well.

I don't let mine out at all. It takes too much energy to catch them little critters and put them back.. I am just too old for that. They seem to be perfectly happy in there cozy little cages. all 33 of them..

My finches are hand tame and know their way around the house so I usually leave the cage door open for them so they can come and go as they please, if I need them back in the cage I just whistle for them and they fly right on me and I put them back in.

Wow Geordie... I am very impressed. You must have really spent lots of time training your little ones. I may one day see what mine will do if I let them out. Hubby is working now on a large avairy for them so at the time he gets it finished they will be able to fly at their leisure. I am thinking they are going to just love that.
