Granatina ianthinogaster is the Purple Grenadier. I had read on the feathered flyer forum that this species had been reclassified some time ago, but if you do a search, you don't find anything. Search under Uraeginthus ianthinogaster and you will find Purple Grenadier.

Birds Express has these listed at $450 each! I am hearing it is because they have experienced huge losses in quarantine. As my source tells me 'They are dropping like flies, so the high price is to recoup their losses.' Shame.

Sally I had to check the site again to make sure but it still says that they are $450 for the pair (not each). And you are correct death rates have been very high. This has been one of the best imports we have had in a while, but unfortunately many of them have been lost or taken already as some of these will never make it to the last links (small time breeders/hobbyist like us).

Oops, my bad, I was going by the price list, which didn't specify per pair, but when you click on the species, it does say price is per pair. And you are correct, many of these species will be snapped up by the larger dealers.

I haven't heard on most of these species, soI'm assuming it is a shipment out of Africa. I did hear on the Strawberries that they were coming from Europe, but who knows. They (Berries) certainly aren't coming straight out of Asia, as there is still a ban on Asian imports due to bird flu. The import business is cloaked in secrecy, difficult to get straight answers.

Too true Sally. I know here in SA there are people who advertise for domestically bred birds that can be exported. I'm just curious if these are wild caught or domestic bred exports.

I'm convinced the pair of RH Finches i recently bought "fell off the back of a truck". They should be sold on permit but the petshop's here like to act dumb when asked where they came from. There is still a large illegal market unfortunately. I know of one breeder who specifically stopped with African species as he said it was just encouraging the illegal capture and selling of the birds.

Wouldn't the opposite be true? More breeders working with the species equals more captive bred birds for the market. Competition for the illegal trappers.

For the Purple Grens - $450 per Pair is not that unreasonable.

Please, if you are interested, (and can afford it!) get a pair or 2!

We need some good, private breeders to work with these.
