Decision time

Post by lpappy » Fri Oct 11, 2013 8:11 am

Well I have tried everything and now I have to make a decision on what to do with my zebras. I altered the cage and for awhile life was good but now we are all bickering again. I took out the nests and have found eggs on the floor of the cage so I think they want to breed but I don't have anymore room for cages. I have 7 in a decent size cage but they are little devils. I do have a friend that owns a pet store that would probably take them from me but - and I know this sounds crazy - I'm afraid whoever buys them won't take care of them. I guess it's more that I don't want to part with them but they are making it tough. My goulds and RCCB's are as happy as clams and so easy as these little guys are just driving me nuts! If I had someone that I knew would take care of them I would gladly give them a pair. Decisions decisions.

This is a tuff one...I always use to say, "If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would only get 1 pair of zebras!!!" Well...I started up my new flock and currently have 0 zebras. I am waiting for a Penguin pair from Chelsea...I cant wait till they finally arrive :) ...but dread the bickering/bullying potential that awaits me. I think rehoming all but 1 pair, to someone you know might be a good solution to your housing issue. Good luck...it wont be an easy decision to make

If the pet store owner is a friend of yours, perhaps you could be more confident that she will inform potential buyers of the actual needs of these birds and be sure they understand and are willing to house and care for them appropriately before she sells them. If I were in your position, I would probably try to rehome them, or at least some of them. They are obviously not enjoying each others' company and it is making life more stressful for you as well.

As much as we love our birds and feel responsible for them, sometimes there are birds that, for one reason or another, we just cannot care for. I am certainly not in favor of just jettisoning birds at the drop of a hat, but you have clearly struggled with this and done the best you could for them. Sadly, given their personalities, it just isn't working for any of you.

Thanks Ginene and Donna!
I spoke to my friend and right now she has some zebras to sell herself. So, what I decided to do was take the two out that seemed to be picked on and I put them in a cage I normally keep as a hospital cage. Then I changed the cage all around. Now I'm going to wait and see if that makes a difference if not my husband cut a board for me to fit right down the middle of the cage and I'm going to seperate the males from the females and see if that works. They are little devils!

Thanks Ginene and good luck to you with your new flock! If you're in Staten Island we are not that far away from each other :)
