Soc puffy dances to males only - what does it mean?

Hi again everyone

So I have two Soc's (Rocksteady and John) both males.
Rockstready ist he father of John and the other two females all housed together.. all wonderful no mean behavior what-so-ever.

Lately John has been puffy dancing a lot but only to his dad (also, John is MASSIVE next to his dad as well if this means anything).
What is this behavior? Is he trying to do some kind of dance off with Dad?
or is it a "i'm better than you" attitude of an adolescent?

Dad doesn't care doesn't peck, fly away or dance off with him he just looks at him and ignores him and goes on about what he was doing.

I'd bet he's practicing his puffy dance, and trying to prove himself a "big boy" now.

When he gets a bit older, and realizes what GIRLS!!! are, he'll start dancing for them, too.

My males dance for the girls, but still also at each other as well. Trying to win a wife, and trying to prove to the other guys that he's the top bird.

Or else they're all just confused.

I just wasn't sure why he's not doing it to everyone, just dad. I guess he is till immature lol hasn't reached puberty.

I also have confused budgies, George and Lake, confused degus, Chitter and Chester, and confused parrotlets, Jellybean and Gumdrop. And then lots of various confused finches. Obviously, it's perfectly natural.

All 4 of my new societies puffy dance at random times...to each other, to the single hen and even when they're all alone! I think they like to hear themselves sing and practice their moves ! Puffy dances make me super happy !!! Mo, our giant Euro society, has the loudest song for sure!!! Max has the lowest and sings/dances the least . Poor Max...he has a gimpy wing too... He fits right in at our house. I plan on spoiling him ROTTEN

I have noticed mine do that too at first. I think they are looking to dad for approval.

JOHN is SO LOUD... hes built like Roseanne, HUGE and when hes bouncing its rocking the other socs as well its quite funny!

@Ginene, what is wrong with Max? He sounds like a true sweetheart though! I hope you find a pretty little girl for him who's not a full on tomboy like my Roseanne.. she's so pushy and her big butt just barges in when they are all happily eating. WHen I put in fresh food I see her on the other side SNAPPING her beaks like shes on some kind of withdrawal! Like honestly girl, YOU KNOW you're going to get some lol quivering for egg food, seeds, greens...

HAha, not sure if dad is approving he just looks at him up and down (as he towers over him plus hes all standing tall cause hes puffing) and just looks away stone cold. It would be pretty cool if they puffed off together.. all the girls rolling their eyes lol

Max has clubbed feet and a gimpy wing . I put lots of ledges and adaptive perches in the flight for him. I also have a solid platform covering part of the floor, because he doesn't walk well on the bars. I'm not getting him a mate, as Su said sometimes frilled societies develop clubbed feet...He's with 3 other males and 1 hen. They are all doing well together and so far, no one is being left out. I am happy to have him...when Su saw what happened to his feet, she sent another crested/neck frilled male (Curly) and let me have Max at no charge . That was super sweet of her. I think he will do well here. I have been able to adapt the flight so he can get around and enjoy all of the yummy fresh veggies and supplements. His puffy dance is adorable and very quiet...he's a real sweetie pie .

Hermit is my small society, the 90 pound weakling of legend, was very intimidated by all the posturing and showing off of the youngsters as they charged through adolescence. He stayed in his nest most of the time and like Max had a very small quiet song, and when he sang at all it was usually invisibly inside the nest. He sounded so pitiful. It was a shame. Of all of them, he has the sweetest, most musical song.

Now that the other guys, especially brash Patch and Chip, have calmed down, and he's part of a very supportive trio, he stays out most of the time like the others, sings a lot, and louder, and sometimes even at the big guys. My jaw dropped when I saw him puffy dancing at Badger (!!!) the other day. Badger looked too shocked to react. He's a happier bird for sure.

John is, as the others said, just growing up, practicing, and telling Dad that he's not a baby anymore. He's HERE! Rocksteady's reaction seems pretty normal too. All of my males, when being sung at, will either go away or just look at the singer like he's lost his mind.

I'm not sure confused is correct. More than likely they are practicing their displaying and song as well as competing for the dominant male spot.

That's what I figured...Max has resigned himself to not being top bird...but is getting along well with everyone; more importantly, no one is picking on him . My 2 BCCB males fight/argue throughout the day...not hurting one another, just lots of squawking and mid-air wrestling. This is probably for the same reason, right??? So far Bert seems to be top finch. He sings the most and makes squawking noises even when Ernie is no where near him.
