orange bishop weaver behavior

Post by eladneflis » Thu Oct 17, 2013 5:29 pm

I have an orange bishop weaver. He lives in my living room in a niche created by a wall and a cage, so he is free flying. There are 4 cages in the room containing finches and waxbills. He likes to sit on the waxbill cage and watch them. One day he brought a leaf from the plant in his nesting place to the top of the waxbill cage. He made several attempts to poke it through the bars until he finally succeeded. He watched it drop into the cage, where a gold breasted picked it up and took it into its nest. We were astonished. Our bishop then flew back to his nest and tried to pull off more leaves without success. It could have been just a fluke. Then today my husband watched him do the same thing, then sit on the waxbill cage and watch them looking very comfortable. Has anyone seen anything like this in weaver behavior? It seems like a rather high level of cognitive processing.

I've never seen or heard anything like this, but it's a cool story to tell. :) Birds are so smart! :)
