I dont think I can do it !!!

Heya.

It is way past the time to rehome my society babies. I need to make the space and I don't need them breeding with each other. And being societies I am going to have lots unless I take the nest out of course.

BUT I am sooooo attached to them, I have named them all and I sit with them all day and I know all their cute little behaviours and colours and who is who. Mum and Dad of the gingers have already hatched another clutch which will be on the way to fledging soon so I will have even more.

How do you do it? I keep thinking about what homes they will go to, will they be treated well or spoilt or will they just be thrown out into an aviary and live in the dark never to be seen again, just to be bred with.

I know I am over thinking this but I have put so much time into these little balls of fluff and being my first bunch it is really hard to let them go. But, they have to go.

Do I sell to a pet shop? Do I sell to a breeder? or do i just advertise them? I realise at the end of the day I really don't have any control over where they are going to go as I don't know any one personally that can take them. Who ever gets them is going to have me in tears handing them over.

Does it get easier as you go along and rehome more? Even hubby is sad to see them go, big bad biker loves his finches, so cute.

Oh dear, what do I do? Do I keep them all and never breed again or do I toughen up and rehome them. i don't have space for one more single bird if I keep them.

If your looking to have some type of control on where they go I would not sell to a pet store.
There is nothing wrong with not breeding if you really want to keep them all but be prepared to throw out eggs.
Sadly it doesn't get much better. You can't help but get attached after watching the miracle of hatching to nestling to fledgling.
best of luck in whichever you decide :)

It is a very difficult part of this hobby. And it doesn't get easier.
I have always been VERY particular about where my birds go and even then there is always some discomfort in not knowing for sure.

I think it is GREAT that you care so much. There are many who don't.... :(

Mands, it's a horrible decision, isn't it... I'm in the same boat as you, especially with my Gouldians. I've spent almost 8 months watching them grow up and watching with huge excitement now as they finally color up - how the heck am I supposed to part with them!?

Luckily I have 2 breeders that are interested in swopping or buying from me, both awesome homes. But after that, I don't know... The petshop must be my absolute last resort.

I want to do a vet check on all homes before letting them go but I know it's just not practical :(

Yeesh...I don't envy any of you!!! I got super attached to my 2 hand fed zebras and planned on keeping them. The others were going to Lil Joe's cousins. Try advertising on forums like this one. Maybe you will find some finch lovers close to home. Best of luck, Mandie :)

Thanks every one. I don't know what I'm going to do. I will advertise them on a local site for pets and see how that goes, at least they will have to ring me first. Oh no I can't do it - I will be a blubbering mess and send a care sheet of notes with them. I will want to do a house inspection and get a police check done on them. Make sure they are not criminals trading in trafficking in beautiful mannikins.

Jokes aside. This is gonna hurt.

Mands Ahhhhhh, the first time I rehomed I cried... And they were going to a FRIEND! After that, the few that I rehomed, it did get easier after the original panic and worry. I try to get to know the people a little prior.

I am holding on the three juvies for someone who is building a house, and I am so sick of them. I want them gone, but because I like her and care for birds, I am doing it...

One day at a time! Be picky and you will be find

Mandie I am in the same situation too. Seems to be pretty common. I have 4 young who are 8 months now who I could not rehome. My first clutch. I named them and got way too attached. Would love to have more babies but until I can learn to rehome just have no room. Who would of thought loving these little guys would be such a delema! Good luck with what you decide.

I find it very difficult to rehome babies, also. That's how I ended up with nearly 30 canaries in my living room a few years back. It does help to place them with friends or trusted people such as you would meet on this forum. Either that or a family ultimatum - "get rid of some of the birds - it's like a nut house in here. They're driving us up a bleepin" wall". Bob

Thanks for your support everyone.

This is all just too hard right now so the temporary solution is - to buy a another new cage !! I just down sized 2 cages and now I have gone and bought a bigger one.

I have put the baby gingers and chocolate societies in there. They are more than happy in there and it gives me much more time to work things out. My biggest problem is I don't know anyone with birds, so i have no one to rehome them with. I am worried because they were bred indoors and I am scared someone will buy them and just throw them outside into an aviary and they will die from cold.

Oh well, I have fixed the problem for now. Here is the new home.

I am trying to rehome canaries right now and its hard to let them go but finding homes for them is even harder. No one wants canaries.

No one wants canaries.
That is so surprising to hear...I loved my canaries! They are so beautiful and they're a great size bird too.

Must have something to do with geographical location. I never had any trouble placing or selling canaries - just hated to let them go when I did. Bob

I love my canary, Kevin! He's such a sweetie, but he's 12 years old! I can't get more than three birds at the moment. I'd love to get more, but they are expensive to keep!
