He is singing! and more stories...
My daughter wanted to change the Gouldian's names, so they are now Pongo and Perdita, from 101 Dalmations.
The female is braver than the male, she is the one to explore anything new in the cage, I put in oyster shell and she tried it first. Gave them greens, egg food, and she tried them first.
But Pongo started singing today for the first time! I heard this bizarre sound coming from them, and realized it was his little song. He has changed it, and expanded on it all afternoon, until it is becoming quite a pretty song.
If I talk to them softly, when I put my hand in the cage to change something, they don't freak out, they will sit on one perch and watch, so that is pretty huge!
Their cage is right beside my aquarium, and every now and then Perdita will notice the fish, and will streeetch her neck out and stare at the fish!
They have a food hopper and a feed tube, and prefer the hopper, I haven't seen them touch the feed tube since the first day.
They have a water tube and a cup of water, and they drink from both, and the male likes to give a little splash in the cup, so I change it daily.
I put a bath in the bottom of the cage, just a little dish with water, but neither will go near it.
I feel like I have had them forever, they just fit perfectly into our home!

I love reading posts like this from new finch owners. It reminds me to slow down and just enjoy the wonder of the birds.
Gouldians aren't great bathers, like some of my other finches, though I have 3 LG fledglings fostered to Societies that are learning from their foster parents to enjoy their bath and also to be more adventurous about new foods.

My socities make the biggest splash during there baths and all the other finches sit there waiting to get to the bath.

I have two shaft tails in with my socities. they will not use the bathing bowl there is one water dish they use so. I had to put a different water system in so that every one had clean water to drink.

they look like up side down test tubes with a small trough sticking through the bars. It is so small that they can't sit on it and drink i put a limb for them to perch on. I use the natural looking limbs in their cage. they can get up in the trees (the branches are all in the upper 1/3 of cage). I have rocks in the bottom and I put Timothy Hay from Kaytee in there. they can forage in the grass or hide in the trees. I got some of that plastic coated paper with green plants on it on one side and across the back. it looks like trees (got it from the fish department, it goes qn back of fish tanks).
