Keeping aviary area warm, constant temp?
New here, so I want to ask.. I see and hear lots of folks with outdoor aviaries but for those of us with indoor cages.. How important is it to maintain temps of 75 degrees F?

My birds are indoors, and I keep my house thermostat set at 70 degrees in the daytime, 65 degrees at night. My bird room has lots of fluorescent lights, so it is probably a bit warmer during the day. It is certainly not critical to maintain 75 degrees. I lost power once this winter, and I don't even remember how cool it got except that I was having to put on more layers of clothing, and then the power came back on. The group that may be most sensitive to cold temperatures would be the waxbills, they usually prefer a temperature above 50 degrees. But I would not worry at all about a varying temperature. Our birds are tougher than we think.

I keep mine set at 68. The sun through the windows makes it much warmer though. In the summer it gets a lot warmer in there. I agree.. the waxbills like to stay warm. My strawberry and goldbreast like to sit under a warming light most of the day!

I have parrot finches, green singers, owls and society's. The parrot finches and green singers want the heat. They fluff up easily if the temp in the bird room is not 75 or above. That said, in summer, I close A/C vents in the bird room, but I have to watch the temp does not get over 90 in the bird room, as they seem to get overheated. Having bath water helps with the heat. In winter, I have an indoor electric room heater, which keeps the bird room warm while my house is a lower temp for our family.

I think the only time temperature would make a major impact is if the finch species relies on it for breeding stimuli.
Most are light sensitive or seasonal feed driven, so you could get away with keeping it simple and not having to go to extreme lengths to vary your temperature. You would only have to keep it warm enough for their comfort.
