My Lovely Lonchurids

Post by Sheather » Sun Mar 23, 2014 6:54 pm

I just got into the hobby last autumn, but I've really grown to love finches. :D

Image

My first birds were a pair of spice finches, and I kept them for a while. They were my beginning birds and were pretty good for this but I later ended up purchasing a pair of societies also, and fell in love with their personalities. As my two societies Flurry (left) and Errol (right) began to expect their first babies, I decided I would rehome Pepper and Nutmeg (spices) to someone with much bigger accommodations and concentrate only on societies. In this time, Flurry and Errol had a healthy clutch of four babies - two girls and two boys, and I adopted two other pied hens, whom I named Lyra and Aurora. All was good on the finchy scene, and I ended up keeping two of the four chicks, a mostly fawn hen named Lizzie and a chocolate pied male named Apollo.

But well, when my local shop suddenly began to carry Java Sparrows - a species I had wanted so much before but could not find - I simply had to get them too. XD So though it went against my initial society-only plans, I don't regret bringing home Henry (white) and Michael (slightly pied) one bit. They now share one cage, and the society family another. I know the societies are a little crowded but don't seem to mind, and I will one day be upgrading their accomodations. I also don't know the java's genders, so their names may end up being rather inappropriate if both turned out to be hens; I do hope though that I've ended up with a pair.

So without further ado, here's my feathery flock.

Dylan, I love your pictures, and your birds are beautiful. I have to say, that I also have a soft spot for Societies. They have such sweet personalities and I just love how good natured and curious they are. Most birds see a camera and they run screaming into the night, but not my Socies, they love getting their pictures taken.

They are very cute, especially little Gimpy. He is the one with the bad leg, right?

I like Petey's markings the most. I love pieds.

Hi Guy.
Thanks.
Yea, little Gimpy (aka Gimply)is the baby with the twisted paw. You should see him after his bath, when he puffs out his scrawny little chest, raises two feathers on his flat mop/top head and belts out a song while doing his fancy dance. Laugh? OMG.

Can't help but love the tiny fella, he's so fiesty and brave, and has no idea that there is anything wrong with him.

The next society, will be a chestnut or fawn when I find him. All the ones I've seen so far are girls and I'm looking for a little boy.

How are Henry/Henriette and Michael/Michayla doing?

By the way Dylan. I still love those flights. I wish I could get a couple, but can't have them shipped up here. :-(

They are wonderful! They aren't really warmed up to each other yet (do Java sparrows get all lovey and cuddly like societies once they bond?) but except for some beak fencing they get along good so far. They loooove broccoli. Societies nibble the buds but these guys gnaw down an entire stalk! They're very cute and very clever little guys but they're pretty timid of people so far. They were colony and aviary-bred, I believe, so it's a bit of an adjustment for them I know.

Thank you about the flights also. They're nice cages though I personally consider them to be a bit small.

And also I still don't know who is who, but Henry has a bald patch which makes me think he might have been groomed by an overly amorous partner - a male maybe? So maybe he's a hen?

Neither bird sings but their calls are distinct from eachother. I guess this might just be if they were raised by different parents though. Henry's calls are sharper and Michael's are more chattery.

Sheather.
Re the flights mentioned above. If you were to take two of them and make them into one, how would that look?

As to the Javas, I honestly don't know if they are into cuddling with one another. Maybe ask one of the folks who raise them.
Goodluck.

I believe Nerien has such a setup. It would be 5 feet long and very roomy but I lack the room to do this.
