I got hubby a pair of baby hand tamed Australian budgies....they are cute taboot. I never realised how sweet they are

Their names are "Buster & Trixie-bell"
I have another bird sale on Sunday, hoping to get a pair of yellow backed Gouldians. See how it goes.

Beautiful birds!
There's a reason that budgies are one of the world's most popular pet birds! Keep up with their taming, and you will have yourself some real characters that are a joy to own. Two boys is probably the best combination for having multiples that actually stay tame too.
I love the cinnamon opaline violet. It's one of my favorite combinations.

They are beautiful, Mandie!
Got them for hubbie, eh?
Haven't had budgies since I was a child, which was many moons ago. Very pretty, very cute, but as I recall very, VERY noisy.
Congratulations, girl.

Hi everyone, thanks for replying to my little bundles of joy.
Yes Yes Yes I did get them for hubbie *cough cough*.
I need some information on colours etc. What colour are they? also, they are already hand tamed but a bit jumpy, how long should i have them out on my hand each day, the breeder wasn't very clear, he kept saying "oh its up to you" i don't want to freak them out by catching them all the time, but if that is what is going to tame them further then I will do that.
I put one on each finger this morning and they started chirping for the first time to each other, it was super sweet.
Also, I realised not to give them lettuce and to treat them differently to the finches (which i am not moving away from) right now they just have budgie seed and fresh water, which I don't see them doing much of either.
As for noisy, I don't mind at all, I love the sound of any birds song. Nice to wake up too.

rats, I tried to get the photo to repeat here, but its not showing up!
They both look violet to me in this photo.

With my own violet birds, my eyes have a hard time distinguishing between cobalt and violet, but in this picture the violet really stands out.
They also both look like opalines.
The one on the left is a dominant pied, although clearflight pieds will look very similar. If it has a band of white across its front, then I would go with Dominant Pied (Also often called Australian Banded pied in Australia.)
The one on the right is a cinnamon opaline violet.
When my customers are buying parent raised birds and have to tame them from scratch, I recommend they try to get in 20 minutes per day of working with them. Not necessarily all in one stretch. (Personally, I can't manage 20 minutes at one time- it really drags.) I tell them that it's important to work with them every day, because if they only do it on weekends, then they will not see any progress, and they will wonder why not. I do have them wait for a few days for the bird to settle in, so they can make sure that it is eating, and doesn't lose too much weight right at first.
But that is for parent raised. For hand fed babies, the new owner can expect them to settle in much quicker, and to be good with handling and playing from day one. If yours are a little jumpy, then you may have to do some remedial taming with them. Until you are sure that they are eating fine, say for a few days, I would try not to scare them with your hands. If they are fine with being handled, take your cue from them. After a few days, then I would start making sure you get the 20 minutes or more in daily. The more you can make time for, the better bond you will make with them. Also, remember that you have two, so you have to compete with the other bird, and that is something humans aren't nearly as good at as birds are. Working with two at a time is hard, but since they were hand fed, then it shouldn't be a problem.

By the way, which poor boy got the name "Trixie-bell"?

Too cute. I acquired two budgies this past weekend and I named one Buster and the other Cloteal. Too funny! A lady purchased these for her young daughter who grew tired of them. She gave birds and cage away for free. One is yellow and the other blue. They reminded me of my first parakeets as a child...couldn't pass them up!!! Love them and all their singing! Will post pics soon. Enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine!

They are a pair, one male and one female. Would you believe my big bad biker hubby named them, he called his last finch "Fairy bread" and the little Gouldian baby "Clint Eastwood". Its a rule in the house that he names all the animals. It is always a time of amusement.

Jen How funny with the names !!
I have only ever had one budgie before and he was a terror, but he wasn't hand tamed, but he was full of amusement.
Hubby just loves the birds and now that the cold weather has set in, I thought why not get a couple of budgies to keep us company and make some friends. So far, they are very very cute.
Finnie Thanks for the tips on taming them. We have tried about 8 times since we got them as the breeder said to handle them straight away, they run away in the cage and don't jump straight on your finger, so I was worried we were doing more harm. Today I seen the male eating from the bowl, I also put some seed on the bottom of the cage which they have been picking through. I got the female yesterday, only one day later. Today they have been singing away. I noticed why I run the tap of water they start to sing every time....interesting !!
Thanks for the info re their colours, I did want a yellow female but he said the only ones he had were biters and weren't going to be available, oh well once I had them home they are both very pretty.
I just want to do the right thing about continuing to hand tame them, they jump off my hand a bit which worries me, I sit on the couch with them so they don't have far to fall, but they do get a bit of a flight happening.
All a learning curve for me now, It is going to be fun.

Mands.....nice birds..i use to breed budgies had hundreds...tamed a few...wings weren't clipped..they would fly around the house and go back to cage to eat and sleep...i had 2 that could talk...
They were all parent raised...as soon as they could eat i would bring them into the house..i kept them tame for a few years then let them go back to the avairy and raise their own families

dutch Heya
Sounds like you had some fun with your budgies....I would love to breed them and learn to tame the babies. But, not for now, I am still focusing on the finches and have a lot to learn with them. I am loving the budgies though, very sweet little birds
