I Can't Believe My Society's are Acting Like Zebras!

Post by finchmix22 » Thu May 08, 2014 11:29 pm

I have had my three male Society's (Mozart, DaVinci, and Oden) for four years and they never were aggressive or bullied each other, ever! Yet, I noticed the youngest one, Oden, was plucked on his chest/neck area, bald in a nickle size circle! I had heard the other two males singing to the hens in the next door cage, but I'm not sure why they are picking on Oden now? They shared a cage for years without a problem, even when hens were around. Any thoughts?

Hi finchmix22,

ir's likely the dynamics of the four have changed (perhaps in some imperceptible way to us). Oden may have some weakness which the others can sense. I have a runt, a very small star finch, Merl. I have to keep him separate from my canary, Kevin, who has never stopped trying to attack him. My star finch doesn't help himself because he attacks ANY other bird as well, including my friendly Zebra finch, Beaky.

Birds generally try to drive any bird with weakness or illness away. I'm not saying Ogden is ill, but he may be the smallest and weakest of the four. Once a finch is picked on, the others may continue to do so, until they kill it. When I rescued Merl, he was totally bald! He was in a cage with 15 other birds. Perhaps keep him in a separate cage, but next to the others so he can see and hear them, at least until his feathers grow back.

Good luck with them.

Kind Regards
