strange Society Finches

Post by James » Tue May 20, 2008 10:15 pm

:D My society finches are strange. I have a red bowl that is 1" deep and 6" across that I put in their cage every morning and again in the afternoon as a bird bath. Two of them will get in it and splash all over, 3 or 4 others will purch on the sides and get all wet. Then there are 4 that sleep in the same nest at the sametime. I also have a bird bath that hangs on one of the doors all in closed so they can't get water all over . . . . . . . . . . they will not go in it

a lot of birds dont like to feel closed in while bathing, something to do with being in the wild and predators coming along, I know I wouldnt like to be trapped like that.
I use a dish that is 12" in diameter and 1" deep, the birds love it. as soon as I put in fresh water in they all go. except the gouldians who sit on the edge and watch

could it be that the cage they were in at the store had a glass front. I had them in a smaller cage at first. When I went to put them in the flight cage both had large doors so I set the cages next to each other with the doors open. they would not go into the new cage. I still had to catch them.

My society finches are the exact same way. they make a big mess with there water and they all try to stuff into one nest. Sometimes they split up but usually stick together.

The 'Jenny' Wren takes some beating. They often roost together for warmth in the winter. The world record at present is 61 birds observed all crammed together in one nestbox.
Makes a few societies in one box chicken feed.

James this is not really strange this is how they do it in our aviary by choice, They don't like the confined type of bird bath as you mentioned. For sleeping they often like to pile up in pyramid style cramming many in one nest. Sleeping and bathing activities are really different for them (mentally)

I have 9 finches, and they all sleep in a small flat clay saucer. They sandwhich in, and peep their heads over the rim. They look like a finch pie.
