Annie's New Perching Platform

So, today I finally got all the societies and the owl finches (Hoot and Annie) moved over into their "new" flight cage now that the linnies have moved out and into their own new huge flight. I spent all day cleaning and arranging and then I made Annie, my "handicapped" owl finch, a new platform to hang out on so she won't have to try and balance all the time on her right side.

I took a piece of quality pine and cut the base for the platform, with nice rounded outside corners, then sanded it smooth. Then I took a 1/4 inch piece of hardboard and cut it as a back for attaching the platform and connecting it to the cage bars with bolts and washers and wing nuts. For now I've got it covered with a piece of puppy potty pad and taped on. This will not work for me long term, but will do for now.

Voila!

But you'll notice that Hoot and Annie are hanging out on the dowel below the societies' nest.

Lol! Go figure..... Hahaha! Annie will figure it out. It's probably still new and she hasn't realized it will be easier for her.

Apparently I've underestimated her, because I've seen her hanging out on that swing a couple of times today.

My handicap finches rarely use their platform perch, but sometimes it helps them. They prefer to sit together on a branch type perch. So, I put one in there that is Y shaped and a little thicker and sure enough, MIa sits in the middle of the Y and rests her chest in the center. So, you could try something similar, although, I think we do underestimate their ability to adapt.
