My 1st eggs in ~12 years! :D

Post by WrenNAustinTX » Tue Sep 09, 2014 9:06 am

Got out of breeding zebs in high school (can't say my parents enjoyed all the feathers and moths) but now I've got 5 pairs...AND EGGS!

These are from Henry and Anne, so I expect nothing but black cheeks, but I'm so excited. Checked the nest box yesterday morning and nothing, and today (right on schedule), two eggs! (I guess she snuck in a late lay yesterday :D)

Also, would you guys say the weirdly shaped one was probably the first laid, and also that the weird shape means it probably won't hatch? Just wondering.

Congrats!

I've seen eggs that look like either of the two hatch. So both might hatch.

Both eggs look normal to me. I see eggs like that all the time.

Do they know this? If not, you might want to tell them. Birds have this odd knack of doing things on their own terms!

I don't think the pointed-egg is a problem. I had two Society hens that regularly laid clutches with regular and pointed (almost football-shaped) eggs. They hatched-out the same....didn't make any difference with size of chicks either.
Congrats on your new clutch!

FinchLady this is good to hear! Now I'm worried a out that pointed egg having a different color than the other two, but heck lol

@saulosirds I have mentioned it to them every morning lol calculated from the first morning I caught them mating, and they have been building and fussing around that nest like crazy, so maybe I'm not totally off :)

Congrats! I agree the egg shape shouldn't make a difference. Can't wait to see pics when they hatch.

finchmix22 When I get home from work (snapped pic a few minutes before I walked out the door), I'll see if they have gone all broody yet. If so, we'll have a likely hatch date! And I guess I'll do update pics in this thread :)

This thread is making me twitch. I'm expecting eggs from my CFWs any day now. There is an "EGGSSSSSSSSSS!!!!" thread in y'all's future.

afinch Sounds like an epic post!

Also, got off work incredibly early (software isn't working, whatever) and guess what? They are incubating. I've seen Anne once in 45 minutes, and she darted out for water and egg food and darter back in..haven't seen much from Henry, either. 12 days!

If mine lay today or tomorrow we can just sit by the nests and hold hands for the next two weeks or so lol. My female looked extra roosty this morning before I left.

afinch That is the best plan lol I have my black face+black cheek pair due tomorrow (hopefully) so we can count eggs and swap pics until we take over the boards in a flurry of hatchling pics 2 weeks from now lol

Now, my penguin pair looks rooty but I haven't seen them mating, and the English pair loves their nest and I saw some attempts, but no nest building behavior, and my Flordia Silver pair just got introduced so...between now and December should be fun lol
