Thought I'd share the first few days of my Societies' second clutch, which is starting out way better than the last one. I guess they got all the practice they needed raising up Beans Too, so now they are pros.

This is the past week of hatchings in order, starting on 9/4/14, Thursday of last week, until today. Introducing Apollo, Aella, Adonis, Acantha, Arcas, and Althea. Enjoy :)

Oh my... They are so cute and pink and tiny. How many are there all together? Hang on, I can count...six little pinkies. Seems like quite a nest full. What on earth are you going to do with all of those babies when they grow up? Send some over to: delray??? I guess our Brian, wouldn't mind.

Very ugly like all baby birds. :D Looking at it from a male point of view.

Too cute, but as Marius pointed out only us finchaholics think so. Well done on what looks like a lovely clutch.

I got two scares over this past week. Two times I discovered a baby had fallen out of the nest. ( I could probably use Mia's baby catcher.) Both times they had full crops but easily could have gotten too chilled and died. I always inspect the nest as soon as I get home, and look on the floor of the flight as a matter of habit. It's a good thing.

The second time it happened, I counted three babies but only two eggs, so I knew someone was missing. I couldn't find it and couldn't find it! Checked the nest again. No, still not there. I started moving things around, and there he was, just under the edge of the puppy pad. Still alive, full crop. I immediately put him in my hands to warm him up. Then he got wiggly and I put him back.

I reinforced the nest and made the edge higher and put some stiff plants in front. I won't be able to see in except with my phone camera, but it's ok. It's like a mother with her second or third child. I know what's happening in there now, so I won't be as preoccupied with their daily development. Maybe just every other day, lol

MariusStegmann They do rather look like aliens; don't they?!

I noticed last night, looking at the photos, that one in particular has a brown spot on his right side of his beak. I'm wondering if he'll be chocolate pie! Can't wait to see how they all feather out! I would love to get a look at his gape to see the mouth markings, but I think unless I pull him out it will be difficult to see him in particular, and I'd rather just leave them be.

KarenB So true, Karen. Well as soon as they get feathers, they stop looking like hairless aliens and more like birds.

I agree it's a good habit to check the bottom of the cage daily or twice a day. Yesterday, I noticed a partial egg on the bottom that had a DIS baby. So, I looked around some more and found a hatchling in the seed dish! Wriggling like crazy. I picked it up and he felt cold, so I warmed him up and put him back in the nest. Then, this morning, he was in the food dish again, but no food in his crop. So, I handfed him and put him back. Mozart went right in and sat on him. I hope he doesn't fall out again. I don't think they are tossing as these are my good foster Society's. The baby might have been pulled out the juvie Forbes, who is a little jealous he can't sit in the nest anymore. #-o

finchmix22 Oh, my, I'm glad you found the little guy...twice!

I almost hold my breath nowadays when I go up to the flight until all are present and accounted for. It would really hurt my heart if one of them fell prey to falling and then not finding them in time.

With my RCCBs, I never expect anything to live, so when I see one on the bottom, I already know it's going to be empty and dead. Sigh.
