Modified Gouldian Song

Post by Toddmin » Mon Sep 15, 2014 8:23 am

I have several juveniles that are still coloring up. I can tell one is a RH.PB.SFYB/B. His brother just finished coloring up, but he is maybe two weeks behind. I heard him singing last week and had to do a double-take. His song, not only has the Gouldian song, but also has a canary song mixed into it. I have one male canary, in the same room, but several feet away in another cage. He must have heard him singing so much that he started to sing like him. It's very interesting to hear him start the canary song and then end up with the Gouldian song.

:-)

Toddmin
Isn't it strange how they learn to mimic eachother. I've noticed that when one bird is singing, others will stop and listen very attentively.
I had to laugh yesterday, when my Luciano (canary) started singing, and my baby Star (Sunny) got really close to him, cocked her little yellow head, <3 and you could tell was enjoying his song immensely.

lovezebs, yes! I notice sometimes one of mine will be singing and the others nearby will lean in and listen really attentively, almost like they are entranced!

Ok good, so I'm not crazy. I have two young zebra boys who are starting to form their song, and I was playing lots of canary songs the past couple of weeks (trying to educate myself on the various songs). Since three days ago, one of them has been including canary notes in his song. First time thought it was a fluke. Second, third, fourth etc, until eventually my wife noticed it too (and she's not at all experienced with finches). I didn't say anything because I still thought if it does happen. I mean, why hasn't anyone else mentioned it? So many people keep canaries and zebs together. Kept thinking I must be imagining it lol....

I'm gonna try to get him on video now lol. Can you do the same?

afinch, I'll try to get it on video, but it won't be easy. That's interesting your zebra boys are singing like a canary too. Thankfully, it is a pretty song!

OMGosh!!! I LOVE that! I "bird-sat" my nephew's (delray) 2 society finches for 1 week and now one of them trills like my BCCB male! It's hysterical

I guess it is more common than I thought. I was thinking maybe it was because he is so young and heard the loud canary. :-)

Todd that's my guess too for my little zeb. I never saw it happen with older zebs.

I wish my Zebras would learn to sing like Luciano, instead of sounding like fog horns. :-L

Listen to the whole thing. He was a little subtle this time, but it's there.

afinch -- That's hilarious!

I love how he comes when you snap!

That's so funny how he does that scratchy zebra vocalizations, but also sings those super lovely and delicate canary notes!

I have a society who grew up with African silverbills, so when she came to me, she did some odd vocalizations that were very silverbill-ish.

Over time, those sounds faded away.
Then we got Silva -- a silverbill -- and it must have spurred her memory as she started making those sounds again! Silva seems to recognize them as something Silverbill-ish, as they'll converse back and forth.
Humum to....

1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

Lol I'm hoping he'll switch to full zebra over time. Not playing any canary vids anymore. Just zebs ;)
