"Standard" society finches

Post by Kiko » Wed Jun 04, 2008 7:45 am

I see a local ad from time to time for someone selling "standard" society finches, that are supposed to be twice as large as normal societies. (Like a standard poodle being larger than a miniature).
I have googled but cannot find any other references to these big guys.

Not looking to own any, just curious, has anyone heard of these?

Zebra finches over here vary greatly...the common or garden aviary bred variety are what I would imagine most people keep. However, over the years breeders have bred strains particularly for showing ,and these birds can look huge compared to the others.
Why breeders who show birds prefer the biggest birds possible, be it Zebras or Budgerigars I don't know. But they always have, they probably think it is likely to draw attention to their birds when being judged.

Hmmm, I'll think about contacting them, just to see if they are friendly and will tell me about their birds!
