I just really thought it was cool to get to see the very first stage of hatching. I've only ever saw after the fact and the shell was nowhere to be found. I wish I could get a progression set of photos of the hatching, but I don't want to disturb mom and dad to do it. I just wanted to share the little hole. :) Wonder how long it will take the little peep to come out. I already had one hatch today, but I think it was late, because it should have hatched yesterday. This one is on schedule. I'm thinking overnight it will hatch and make its appearance in the morning, but I will do good just to get everyone fed before I dash out the door and won't have time to peek in there.

I need a nest cam.

Its is always exciting to see those first pip's developing as you know what is coming.
It usually takes a few hours at least before you see a chick once they pip the shell.

Enjoy your new babies!

Ooh, good catch!
It can take hours or it may happen super fast (under an hour). It just depends on the chick.

They usually use the egg tooth to cut around the circumference of the egg. That turns into an egg hat and they stretch and push it open from there.

It's fascinating to watch. I've seen it with geese and chickens, but never with a finch. I always miss it!
