Pied SG PF drowned
This afternoon I found my SG Pied hen drowned in the water dish. If I didn't watch them for a while this morning, I would not have known what happened to her. I saw that the cock was trying to mate with her all the time. He would jump her all the time, whenever he could. She obviously was taking a bath, when the cock jumped her and mated with her. He must have held her head under water. There was only about a centimeter of water in the bowl. This is the 2nd pied hen that I acquired, and both died. What bad luck.

Re: Pied SG PF drowned
MariusStegmann - I'm sorry to hear this. And right after the holidays too. That's not very merry.
What a freak accident. I'm still surprised an able-bodied hen would be drowned like that; you'd think she would get away. Truly an awful mishap.

Oh no!!!
What a crazy thing to happen. You would think that nutty male would realize that there was something wrong. I have heared that they are really rough lovers, but this ridiculous.
I am so sorry that this happened.

I am so sorry.
I have heard of water fowl doing this, but not finches.
Not your fault, just a freak occurrence.

Parrot finch males can be relentless in their attempts to mate with hens. I had to pull hens since the males would not leave them be to eat or drink. The hens get stress and pretty roughed up even in a long 5 ft flight and lots of greens to hide in.

Thanks, that is bird-keeping, and series of high moments and low moments. Hopefully the highs outweighs the low moments. This FP pair was in a new aviary with only a lot of youngsters with them. In my other aviary, the other males would interfere and a female would not get such unrelented attention all the time. It is very difficult to get pied hens here.

Re: Pied SG PF drowned
you may want to individual cage breed your pfinch pairs and free flight them in a colony when not breeding them. several males will bombard a hen all at once...I had to pull a hen and a mate since the other males were trying to mate her at the same time her male was... the hen suffers in this and becomes stressed and possibly injured. It is almost a brutal scene to witness.
Plus individually breeding your pairs can guarantee true bloodlines/parentage.

cindy The cock was the only adult male with her in the aviary. He was getting a bit impatient with her I think, because she had a lot of missing feathers on her neck.
@Rox Thanx Rox. I don't know if 2014 was such a bad year for me. I got my first PF's in the end of May 2014. I have bred 7 youngsters that grew up. Yes, I lost 2 pied hens, a SG hen and a normal Redface cock flew away, but I have learned a lot and is still relatively new in the PF game. By the way one of the Gouldian pairs that I got from you are sittting on 6 eggs. It should hatch in about a week.

MariusStegmann.
Glad to hear that your Goulds are sitting on egg babies. I find that Gouldian infants are really sweet. They are so ugly, that they're cute. What colours are you expecting?

Re: Pied SG PF drowned
So sorry to hear this, a total freak accident and there's no way it could have been anticipated/prevented.
Most the pieds i bred seem to be cocks and the non pieds are hens, still have a few to colour up but so far only 1 of the coloured up young pieds is a hen.
