MOMMY, MOMMY, THE CRAZY GIANT GREASED US!!!

Post by lovezebs » Sat Dec 27, 2014 4:45 am

Hello Friendly Finchers.

Today was a big day for my baby Gouldians. The Fantastic Four, got taken out of their nest, topped up with a bit of formula, olive-oiled and banded.

I have to say, it was much easier at this age, than later.

Babies however were not happy. Couldn't figure out what was going on and seeing as eyes aren't open yet, couldn't see what was going on either. Parents in the cage right beside me, were watching, but very calm about the whole process.

When babes went back into the nest, Sharra followed them in.
I could hear the little ones complaining to her between mouth fulls of spray millet.
Only to be followed by comforting motherly murmures:
"It's okay little ones, it's okay. I know, l know, that the giant is a little crazy, but there, there, she never really hurts us. Yes, she does crazy things sometimes, but no harm's done. Don't worry, she's not going to cook you, like she cooked that monster Turkey. Hush now sweeties and go to sleep....
Tiny, will you get in here, and help me get them to sleep? Yes, I know they smell funny, but you know, the giant's acting nutty again, what can we do? There, there little darlings, Mommy and Daddy are here..."

LOL, I always feel bad taking them out of the nest with the parents watching my every move. One time I had the baby call out a little chirp. I could just see the parents over my shoulder with their scornful looks.

Hopefully it was easy enough and you at least didn't have to salt shake them out of the nest :D

No salt shaker tactics this time around. This bigger bird house is a lot more spacious, plus I left the roof part off, which makes it easy peasy. I just reach in with my giant paw, grab whatever warm wiggling bod and lift it up and out.

It went very well, seeing as I placed one ring on each leg of each baby. One for family group, one for the fact that this is a second clutch. Still have to jot it down in my note book , but the big job is done. Hopefully the darn things will stay in, and won't have to re-do them today.

I can't believe how big they are getting at 12 days.

We ARE huge when they look at us. Think how brave they must be, not to have a heart attack every time we reach into a cage or a flight... I think that if something the size of a building, reached into my house and tried to grab me, I'd be long gone before they ever managed to catch me.

I love the fact, that these parents trust me with their babies.

When I first got my pair, the MOMENT the sun dropped and the light faded they were GONE, upstairs in a corner all together in any dark spot they can find, today, at night, I wheel in the aviary, and they sleep inside the house, they at about 9 o clock at night sleep on a low perch about belt height and in front of the aviary on a platform, all at ease, they know us and it shows in the trust they have, I can walk past them 6 inches from them and they don't mind, however this takes time to achieve........ we look like giants.

It always makes me feel good, when these little guys put their trust in me, especially trusting me with their infants, knowing that I won't hurt them. It just gives one a warm feeling. :-D

All my guys love love cucumber. It seems to be a great undisputed favourite with finches world wide.

Fishing, eh? Must be nice. We are expecting a cold front to blow in this afternoon. Snow, wind, temperatures dropping down to the - 20's, with wind chill factors into -30's. Yay!!! Just what we wanted (dripping with sarcasm). Anyone for ice fishing??? 8-} 8-} 8-}

My babies will be snuggled in their cozy nest with their Mommy and Daddy, all soft and warm. The rest of the crew, will be glancing out the windows, wondering what all that white stuff is. The Friendly giant will turn up the heat just a little and make a nice big cup of tea, pull on another pair of socks, and a warm sweater, put her feet up, and.....

Who am I kidding???

There will be Snow to shovel, salt and gravel to spread on the ice, bird cags to clean, Christmas mess to clean up, a doggie that needs brushing, a fish tank that needs cleaning, a matted old kitty that needs to be shaved, a mountain of laundry, cat litter boxes to clean, beds to change, more laundry, vacuming of tree needles off the carpet, AND.... trying to figure out what to do with the left overs of a 27 pound turkey ( yes 27 pounds )......

Oh ye Gods, maybe ice fishing might be preferable .....
