New Boys!

So I went to the local bird rescue today and came home with 2 new babies! There were SOOO many birds there that needed a home, it was disheartening. I wish I had room for a bunch more.

But I suppose pictures are in order :)

Meet Andy:

and Dandy:

Andy's in pretty good shape. He could use a bath and a little bit of weight gain/growth (he's on the smaller side), but otherwise he's a healthy baby. Dandy needs some TLC. In one of the finch cages, she had a bunch of white zebras. Most were females but there were a few males. (Most of you know I want males only to avoid breeding.) Dandy's had his tail feathers plucked completely off as well as a few of his back feathers. Otherwise, he seems to be in good health. I have a heat lamp on him just in case his tushy gets cold. <3 What really drew me to him was his diluted orange cheeks and flank markings. Is this a normal color mutation? I don't think I've ever seen it before.

I've picked up some "skin and plumage" vitamin drops as well as "The Missing Link" Avian Bird Food Supplement. I wanted to make sure I started getting him some extra nutrients. Is there anything anybody recommends to help with regrowing of feathers? I have commercial egg food, but would fresh have more nutrients? They have access to cuttlebone at all times and will be getting live mealworms as a treat.

Thanks!

Just an update...I'm a dork. I'm 99% sure Dandy is a CFW. But they're both settling in well. They're eating like crazy and went gaga over their mealworms!

Very sweet looking Zeb's. Kind of you to take in rescue birds. It sure sounds like they landed up at the best home and are being spoilt already. They will look fabulous by the time they next moult.

It's in Neenah, Wisconsin, about 45min-1hr south of Green Bay. It's run by an older couple out of their home.

How do birds end up there? Do you pay for them or give a donation? Those tail feathers will grow back in no time, check for mites though.

All the birds are owner relinquished. She doesn't allow breeding of her birds. There usually is an adoption fee ($5 per finch), but she was going to waive it because I donated my old cage. I ended up giving her money as well. My boyfriend and I are big advocates of rescues and love to help out when we can. She was so grateful.

I didn't see any mites on them or the birds in the same cage as them, but I've been throwing around the idea of using a mite/lice spray on them just in case.
