BCCB Nestling

Post by the.puppeteer » Fri Jul 04, 2008 8:19 pm

Hey all,

sorry I've been missing for a while - working 7 days a week and have a summer course.

So I finally have a BCCB chick after having to remove one of the Society fosters who was killing the chicks as they hatched (lost four to her :( ).

I was just wondering if it looks like my little guy is being plucked? He is 13 days old today and being raised by a single Soc. If he is being plucked is there anything I can do about it (I have no other fosters and as I'm working so much I can't hand feed him for 10 hours of the day). I was planning on keeping him anyway, but would prefer him not to be feather-less lol.

Thanks for any input!

Here is is sleeping today:

And here he is yesterday:

It is hard to tell from a pic, but to me... he doesn't look plucked, but rather just doesn't have all his feathers. I had this happen with a fledging once and I fed the mom some feather fast so the baby would get it too when she fed him. It looks like it is being well fed. If you have some feather fast, it might help.

Thanks for the reply. And it turns out you are right. It was just the way that the feathers come in.

Little Fluffernutter fledged today! I'm so happy he's made it so far.

Love the name! Congrats on getting a BCCB fledgling--not easy to do. So is he still with another foster Society (not the killer!)? It will need to be fed for a while yet, but you can put a dish of nestling food in the cage, also some spray millet that you soak overnight, they start trying out things fairly quickly.

Thanks for the info and tips Sally. Fluffernutter is still with a Society foster and there's a large dish of nestling food, insectavorous food, and dry egg food (none of which the Society has touched) on the floor of the cage next to spray millet and fresh egg food.

The little guy just would not perch at all yesterday but also would not stay in the nestbox at night (jumped out before my hand had left the cage!). This morning I thought I had found out why when I noticed that the outside toe of his left foot was curled under his foot:

But after trying to catch him and chase him around with a camera he finally discovered his wings and the perches:

So the toe shouldn't cause him any issues which is good. I'm not sure if it's broken or just formed that way in the nest box.
