I know this might sound a little petty, but it's hard to follow a thread about a specific topic someone took the time to post about and then "hijacked" by someone else who changes the subject. I find it a little rude to the original poster. It's too easy to create a new thread of your own.

Hope I'm not the only one. If I am, and others don't find it objectionable, then please carry on. I'll survive!

Posts will always 'Wander'
Have you noticed when in a group of people discussing a subject...say in a pub or coffee shop.You start off talking about one thing and ten minutes later the conversation has veered off to something completely different.
It's human nature.
Occasionally I'm guilty of doing this myself ...and have on occasions said 'Sorry to hijack your thread'...but it will always happen

threads seem to wander from time to time. some manage to return to the orginal post while others totally deviate and never return.
it's just something that we have to put up with.

So I was staggering back from the pub the other night when this pink elephant came up to me...

It will always happen mate (not the pink elephants but posts wandering that is). I suggest go with it, because more often than not a wandering thread might hit on a subject that you wanted to talk about anyway but completely forgot, and usually by the time they wander, subjects have already been answered/debated, I quite enjoy the diversity.

Having said that, I do have a one track mind though

One year ago I called my sister and told her that I just got 2 exotic birds, she asked me how much I paid for the lap dances...

In a coffee shop, or in live conversation, it's more controlled. It would be like if I was with a friend in a coffee shop and asked him about his new job and he started talking about the weather! I know it's the nature of these lists to keep the conversation going, but perhaps unfair to the person who started that subject because they might not be getting the answer they asked about.
Okay, so I'll start hijacking some threads. See how all you guys like it!

Personally I don't have a problem with it, I promised somebody pics of my birds so I posted them and it has now developed into a very useful thread about taming finches...

There are at times some folks come thru that will answer question of a thread that went off track or no one has read. These are usually the ones back tracking to catch up.

atarasi, I'm sorta in your corner on this one, although I don't have a problem if someone wishes to hijack any of my threads.

The important thing is that we are not all in the privileged position to be able to read every single post that is made on this forum and people, especially new members and those out of the loop for a couple of days/weeks tend to lose track of what is going on. That is why I believe it to be important for that person to be able to read treads based on the topic. For instance if i see a tread labelled "Bronze winged Manikin" I don't necessarily want to read it at that point as I do not own or intend to own the species, but someone might post the answer to my gouldian breeding dilemmas in there and then I'll miss it.

You all might say, well tough luck then, but some valuable information could be lost if it is posted under the "wrong" topic. If you don't believe me, stop reading posts for a week and then try and catch up, it is scary how much you miss and in such times you must filter through posts or you’ll end up reading the entire day (maybe I’m just a slow reader).

That being said, I still don't mind people high jacking threads as long as the original question was answered satisfactory.

when you are face to face how often does the conversation stay on track? I find that as the conversation progresses the topic changes more often than not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No need too shout james , I have no problem with people changing the topic to some extend or wondering to some other insight on a thread, and if people want to talk about other stuff on a certain topic we probably can't stop them.

In the terms of acceptable use under "site related" the following is quoted

Adding to Existing Threads

Posts should be relative to the thread that they are in. If your post is unrelated to the thread it may be moved.


Now I don't want to go splitting hairs as to when this has not been the case, it was a polite request from atarasi which is some cases bears relevance. The topic of some threads is in some cases so open that I am of opinion that everything basically goes. Like mickp had a tread labelled "my birds" I'm sure he wouldn't mind people talking about all different stuff, but if someone creates a health post with topic "Help my finch is dying" I'm sure the person would not be interested in a new addition to someone's zebra family.

So let's consider one another when posting.

I'll clear that up....the upstate is the North part of the state we live in...Upstate, Piedmont, and Coastal areas.
