First Fledges of Spring

My first Spring fledgling has popped out of the nest. It is a Diamond Firetail, and it has 2 more siblings still in the nest. A pair of canary chicks are also a few days away from fledging. I also saw that my Societies have chicks about 14 days old. They are only alive because of my foot injury because I always destroy their eggs because they have almost zero market value. One of my RTPF pairs are also sitting on eggs. Hopefully it will be the beginning of a bumper year.

Thx Rox and Babs. I must just get enough mobility back to be able to catch birds. My 2nd aviary is still completely empty. I have high hopes for my Parrotfinches this year.

Babs It is like an hour's workout running around in 3 meter box. And I had to cut the handle off my net because 2 birds died earlier this year, when they flew into my net's handle. A parrotfinch and a red-eared waxbill. Now i have only my arm's reach.

Hope you have a complete recovery soon. It is difficult enough to not be completely mobile, but when you have an aviary, it has to be a real problem. Good luck for a great breeding season!

Ouch! Must be super frustrating to try and safely catch them and have them slam right into the handle

Marius, I still have a net of yours. We really must make a plan to meet up so that I can give it back to you.

I've been trying to trap my excess birds versus netting but it does take much longer, especially with the waxbills. Gouldians are dumb and go straight into the trap after millet spray but the waxbills are too smart. Think I'm just going to have to go in there with a net and get some exercise

Rox I will come and make a turn by you soon. Now that I can drive, I don't want to be stuck at home. If you want to catch birds with traps, you have to be cruel. You have to withhold food for a substantial time to get the clever ones to be too hungry to care.
