New Gouldians

I bought a new Gouldian pair this morning. The young cock is a Pastel with Black head, white breast and pastel / green back? The hen is a Black head, white breast, green back. I don't know what the genetics of the pastel cock is, The head is visually grey, I suppose that would be black. Would he be a single factor pastel ???
Hoping that the experts will come in and tell me what I have.
I will keep them in quarantine for a week before putting them inside my aviary.

Congratulations.
I'm hopeless with genetics, so I won't even take a guess

Marius they are lovely! I LOVE the way the pastel one has a yellow tinge on the beak.

Your male is genetically a YH but can't express it.
Explanation:
http://www.finchinfo.com/genetics/lady_ ... colors.php
Yellow head (YH) is an autosomal recessive trait, but also requires at least one red head gene to be present in order to be expressed. If two yellow head genes are present on a bird that has no red head genes (and instead has black head genes), the bird will have a black head with a yellow tipped beak (YTB). This occurs because the bird is genetically a yellow headed bird, but it cannot express the yellow color because the yellow gene depends on the red head gene for expression, and the red head gene is not there.
Because your male is a Pastel it can not express a black head either. Yours is a SF Pastel so the black color is now a grey tint.
Because your male has a WB and SF Pastel, the body color is yellow other wise if it was a PB the body would be a light green colored.
So, he is a YTB.WB.SF Pastel
Very pretty
good luck with them

I am so amused by myself. I think logically where it comes to gouldian genetics, but you can't. You have apply genetics. I thought, if I pair the pastel cock that I just bought with my yellow (RHWBYB) hen, I would get some yellow and some pastel offspring, since both gouldians are basically yellow. (I am male and pastel looks yellow to me.) Great was my surprise when I used the genetic forecaster to see what the chicks would look like, that the males would be normal redheads and the hens pastel blackheads, with purple breasts.
If I put the bh wb gb female to the same male, I 'll get pastels.

I don't think your inputting into that calculator right or I'm miss understanding what your saying.
Your YTB.WB SF Pastel and a RH.WB.Pastel hen would give you:
RH/BH/YH males and BH/YH hens
All WB (you can't get PB from WB birds)
Males will be SF Pastel and DF Pastel, because of WB even the SF will be visually yellow body.
Hens will be Pastel and Green
If I put the bh wb gb female to the same male, I 'll get pastels.
All chicks will have BH/YH heads
All WB because again you can't get PB from WB birds
Males will be SF Pastel and Green
Hens will be Pastel or Green
(I am male and pastel looks yellow to me.)
Pastel refers to the pastel gene that makes a yellow bird so Pastel is yellow unless you have a SF male, then it could be visually yellow or visually lime green

MariusStegmann , i presume your using the forecastor in finchbreederdatabase , i noticed a glitch in it a while back when it came to forecasting offspring from red head split black head pastel cocks were it would only show 50% of the possible outcomes.

debbie276 I thought that pastel was different to yellow. I see what my problem is. I have made a mistake with the genetics in Finchbreeder's database. I have the cock as a DF in stead of SF.

Some people use"pastel" to describe a SF Pastel Blue which is a visually blue bird with a WB or would be visually a white bird which they would then call it a "silver".

Smurf Padraic, I hope that I will get so proficient that I would be able to tell mistakes in the genetic forecaster
@debbie276 This is what I get now. Have I make mistakes in the inputting the genetics?
