There would be no problem (or less) if people who keep birds - any kind of bird - would keep them in a way that would assure their descendants to form established pools of healthy birds. Introducing birds from the wild would thus be unnecessary.

And this applies to all of us - do we keep our birds just because we want to have them, or do we understand bird-keeping as a part of bird-protection and survival of species in captivity?

Reducing this issue to market dynamics is - as I see it - too simplistic. We are part of this market, and if we don't want even stronger governmental regulations in general pet-keeping, we must change our ways of keeping pets - in this case birds.

This means re-thinking hybrids; this means re-thinking the use and dump mentality when it comes to easy breeding birds like societies and zebs; this means re-thinking colour-mutations of certain species with the wild-coloured nearly disappearing (Goulds, and threatened in situ).

Just my two cents...
