Yesterday it was too quiet in the chat room so here goes. My granddaughter had 2 finches 1st. she always left their cage door open and I thought it was gross. Then she gave me the birds. You know how that is kids get dogs, cats, birds, and when they can't have them any more they become ours.
i thought she had somehow trained the birds to just fly away a little and return to the cage. When I got Spreckles the Pied society kept that bird in a closed cage for a few days so they could just look at each other and talk. When i opened the door that bird made a beeline for the Blue and the blue left her cage. Eventually they made friends but they never fought. At first Spreckles lapped the entire room just because he/she could. What they do when they finally realize the door is going to stay open is make little laps, fly to the top of the cage, hop around on everything, all the open doors, ladders, nests, anything different. I have water everywhere 5 different spots to drink and a bowl for bathing. there are 4 different places to eat and different places to perch. They really like to exercise some in the morning. Originally I assumed that "those birds" would have poop all over my house. I like to have a clean house, even if by proximity my drawers do get feathers and seed in them...oh well. Seems like feathers and seeds are much more of a mess than poop. I do wipe off the walls if I see a little pop of white. it seems so worth it though for them to be happy. They get mad if I shut the door. I thought maybe I would close the cage doors at night, would you believe those buggers stood on the edge or on top so that I couldn't? Smart. Spreckles is getting more acquainted with my face haha and voice and isn't quite as nervous. It has taken time for that a few months. They love music. I play instrumental music for them, Secret Garden and Enya. They chirp along. I am beginning to think I may have 2 females. My CB beak is turning black that means she is ready for mating right? Which at her age I would never do!! Such a pretty bird.
OK so how about some of your stories??? How did you get into finches?

Re: I let my birds fly
I always let my finches and all of my birds fly out of their cages all day long. They're so much more enjoyable to see flying in a more natural state with some small semblance of freedom.

Spreckles
I got interested in birds, when I was three or four, and a HUGE parrot in a Pet Shop, bit my finger. Granted, I did stick my finger in his cage, so he was within his rights.
Growing up, there were a couple of budgies, then a couple more (as a young teen). Then there were some Canaries and later some Finches, and some more Canaries.
Then once the Canaries passed away, a friend offered me a juvie Love Bird. Stupid me, I thought Lovebirds, were so named for their personality, lol. Was I ever wrong ! The Lovebird thing lasted for close to twenty years, after which I sort of swore off birds.
That lasted for a few short months, until I heared a Canary singing at Golden Acres garden center. That was my downfall.
Within a very short period of time, I had Luciano (my beautiful red factor boy) singing in my kitchen.
One Canary, that was going to be it.....no more !
Yea right !
At present there are:
Canaries
Zebras
Societies
Red faced Parrot Finches
Gouldians
Budgies
Cut throat
Owls
Stars
Orange cheeks
Strawberries
Red brows
African fires
Shaft Tails
Goldbreasts
I was also never going to breed again, not after the Lovebirds, not ever!
My birds had other ideas entirely......
I've gone from being a somewhat reluctant bird owner into a hobby breeder, without even knowing how on earth it happened

Good Egg
Sounds like you have a household full! I love the singing or in my case chirping which makes me think I may have to girls. You have some varieties that are listed as more aggressive are in their own cages? I was hoping Dylan would ship me some of the Spice hybrids before it gets cold. If i end up with enough room maybe we will have some babies down the road. I would enjoy a bigger space for birds. I keep them in my room to keep the cat away from them!! My dogs don't bother them
