I finally had a pair of goulds pair up and they built a nest and saw them mate. Today i went out to the cage to give everyone food and water and found my female gould dead on the bottom of the cage. The only thing i could think of was her possibly being eggbound. I give them cuttlebone for calcium and she had been eating it for the last 3 days. She wasnt fluffed up and was very active all day yesterday. The male was on the bottom of the cage with her and was just staring at her and chirping at her. It was so sad. Now i have 4 males and 3 females. I am going to get him a new mate as soon as i get paid next Thursday.

I'm very sorry to hear about your female gouldian Jamezy. I know how difficult it is loosing one.

Were there any possible predators around?

Thank You all! Today i came home from work and heard him calling for her. He sits by the edge of the cage calling and keeps looking in the nest.

After Vash (male gouldian) died here, Milly called for him for two months straight. I finally found her another male and she accepted him straight away. It was sad hearing her loud "beep beep!" looking for her boy though .

Sorry for your loss. It seems like goulds just up and die sometimes. I just had two babies fledge. I banded them and put them in their nest for the night. The next day I found one dead in the nest.

I told the Doctor who i work for today about my gouldian dieing and of course she just had to go out and buy me a new female. We were going to find a cage at my friends pet shop and the Doctor was like, get another gouldian and she said when i give her a baby we will be even, lol. She is a black head normal split to blue and i have two other black heads split to blue so hopefully they will give me black head blue backs.

Damn! Tell her I lost my male button quail last month. lol

Sorry for your loss, and glad you got a replacement so quickly. One thing to remember if you are breeding your finches--they need extra vitamin D3 in order to absorb that extra calcium. In my opinion, if you want to breed, you need to feed a supplement aimed at breeding birds, or figure out how to give them the extra vitamins they need at this time.
