In talking to our local bird club show chairperson about this problem, she has come up with the idea possibly to have novice bird shows. Our bird club could rent a room in a central location, perhaps get a local current or retired judge to donate an afternoon, and put on a finch show just for novices. The experienced show people in the area could donate cages for the novices to use. Novices could bring their birds to the show, and they would be walked through the process of preparing the show cage, putting the bird in the show cage, filling out and attaching show tags, filling out show entry forms, and then we would have a novice show. There are plenty of us in this area who would be willing to donate their ribbons for such a show.
How many forum members in the Texas area would be interested in such a program? Would there be enough interest for this to go national? How many forum members would be interested in such a program in their area? And those of you who are lurking out there, we would like to reach you, too! Of course, there would need to be a bird club within reasonable distance to do this, but if there is enough interest, this could be presented to NFSS as a program they might want to develop. If novices are hesitant to show, fearing that they will appear inexperienced or perhaps they fear looking foolish, this would be a way to try out showing without having the expense of buying a show cage or dealing with the pros. (However, at my first show, the pros showed me how to fill out the papers and tags, how to attach the tags, just walked me through the experience.)
I do have my doubts whether there would truly be any interest in such a program. I have offered to supply show cages free of charge at shows. There was some interest last year, none this year. I hope, if we do decide to offer a novice show, that some forum members will at least try it.
I didn't think I wanted to show at all. At one mart, someone was selling used show cages for a very good price, so I picked up 2 on a whim. At our club's next show, I entered two birds, and I was hooked! I love the camaraderie of showing, the social aspect is just as important to me as the showing itself. We have a great group of people in Texas--we all root for and congratulate each other on our placings. We look forward each year to the shows and visiting with friends we only see those few times a year. We make friends that last a lifetime.
OK, off my soapbox--at least for now!
